Chapter 5 - The Collapse of the Dream

By Friday afternoon, the dominoes began to fall. The asset freeze hit my parents’ accounts like a sledgehammer.
My phone exploded with frantic text messages from Sarah. The string quartet had canceled. The vineyard venue had rescinded their booking due to a bounced deposit check. The designer cake company refused to start production. The "perfect" ninety-three thousand dollar dream wedding was evaporating hour by hour.
I was sitting in a quiet coffee shop near my office when Clara, Sarah’s maid of honor and her closest friend from college, walked in. She looked pale and exhausted as she slid into the seat across from me.
"Emily, I saw Marlene's video," Clara said, her voice barely a whisper. "The whole extended family has seen it. Sarah told everyone you were lying, that you forged those bank statements because you were bitter about being single. But then the venue called me today because my credit card was on file for the emergency backup."
"Did you pay them?" I asked calmly.
"No," Clara said, shaking her head. "I called the bank first. Emily... Sarah asked me to take out a twenty-thousand-dollar personal loan to cover the florist, promising my parents would reimburse me next week. If I had done that, I would have been ruined too, wouldn't I?"

"They are drowning, Clara," I told her, reaching across the table to touch her hand. "And they don't care who they pull down with them to stay afloat. Walk away before you become collateral damage."
Clara let out a shaky breath, tears spilling over her lashes. "She's my best friend, but she's a stranger. The girl in that video... the way she smiled while your mom threatened you... it was monstrous."
