Chapter 24 - Whispers in the Dark

The injunction bought them three weeks of uneasy peace, but Victoria wasn't content to wait quietly for a courtroom battle. She began a systematic campaign of psychological warfare designed to tear Emily and Julian apart.

It started with small things. Delivery trucks would arrive at the Victorian house with orders for packing boxes that Emily had never placed. Real estate agents would show up on the porch, claiming they had been hired by a "co-owner" to conduct appraisals for an upcoming sale.

Then, the attacks became personal.

One evening, while Julian was working late at his architectural firm downtown, Emily received an anonymous envelope in the mail. Inside were photocopies of old bank statements from the early 2000s, showing massive financial transfers from Abigail Darcy’s accounts directly to Julian’s father’s old business.

Attached was a typed note: Ask your perfect husband why his family really targeted the Darcy estate decades ago. The Vances aren't your saviors, Emily. They were the original parasites.

When Julian returned home that night, he found Emily sitting on the floor of the living room, surrounded by the photocopies. The fire in the hearth threw long, dancing shadows across her pale face.

"Em? What’s wrong?" Julian asked, immediately dropping his briefcase and kneeling beside her.

Emily handed him the papers, her voice barely a whisper. "Did your father know my grandmother, Julian?"

Julian scanned the documents, his expression turning from confusion to horror. "My father... he had a construction consultancy company that went bankrupt when I was a teenager. I knew he lost everything, but he never told me who his clients were." He looked up, his eyes filled with absolute sincerity. "Emily, I swear to you, I had no idea. I met you entirely by chance at the local historical society preservation meeting last year. You know that."

"I know," Emily said, tears finally spilling over her eyelashes. She reached out and touched his face. "I trust you, Julian. Completely. But Victoria wants me to doubt you. She wants me to think that your love for me is part of some generational revenge scheme."

Julian gripped her hands tightly. "My father was a flawed man, and if he took money from your grandmother, I will find out why. But Victoria underestimates us. She thinks she can use the past to destroy our present. Tomorrow, I’m going to the archives of my father’s old firm. If there’s dirt there, I’m going to dig it up myself before she can use it against us."

Meanwhile, across town in a luxury hotel suite overlooking the city, Victoria Darcy raised a glass of wine to her reflection. On her laptop screen was a live security feed of the exterior of the Victorian house. She smiled, clicking a button to send a new set of documents to a local tabloid journalist.

"Divide and conquer, little Emily," Victoria whispered. "It works every time."
