Chapter 22 - The Secret Will of 1994

The atmosphere inside the Victorian mansion shifted from celebration to suffocating tension within seconds. Julian immediately stepped in front of Emily, his stature commanding and defensive.

"I don't know who you are," Julian stated coldly, "but this is private property, and a private family event. You need to leave immediately before I call the police."

Victoria laughed, a low, melodic sound that sent shivers through everyone present. She opened her leather handbag and pulled out a yellowed, legal-sized document encased in a protective plastic sleeve.

"Call them, young man," Victoria challenged, her eyes locked onto Emily. "But before you do, perhaps your new bride would like to see the true, unredacted last will and testament of Abigail Darcy, dated October 14, 1994. A document that predates the fraudulent piece of paper you used to secure this house."

Aunt Marlene stepped forward, her voice shaking with rage. "You abandoned this family, Victoria! When mother was sick, when the estate was failing, you took your share of the cash and disappeared to Europe! You have no right to this house!"

"The law disagrees, sister dear," Victoria purred. "The document Emily used to claim the Victorian house and the surrounding lands was a standard will written in 2010. However, our mother signed a binding, irrevocable trust agreement in 1994 that explicitly states the house cannot be inherited by anyone who does not bear the Darcy name by birth right. Emily, I understand you just took your lovely husband's surname today. Which means, by your own hand, you have legally disqualified yourself from owning this property."

Emily felt the room spinning. She looked down at her grandmother’s silver watch, then at the document in Victoria’s hand. Was it possible? Had her grandmother made a legal mistake decades ago that could undo everything they had fought to protect?

"This is intimidation," Emily said, her voice steadying as she tapped into the inner strength she had cultivated over months of legal battles. "If you had a legitimate claim, you would have filed it through the courts, not shown up at midnight on my wedding day to terrorize my family."

"Oh, the court filing is happening at nine o'clock tomorrow morning, my dear niece," Victoria smiled maliciously. "I merely wanted to see the look on your face when you realized that your beautiful, authentic life is built on a foundation of sand. Enjoy your wedding night. It will be the last night you sleep under this roof."

With a dramatic swirl of her coat, Victoria turned and walked out into the dark, leaving the front door wide open.

Julian immediately shut the door and locked it, turning to Emily. "We aren't going to let her scare us. Tomorrow morning, we call Ana Brennan. We fight this the exact same way we fought your father."

But Aunt Marlene was weeping quietly into her hands. "Julian... you don't understand. Victoria isn't like Mark. Mark was greedy and foolish. Victoria is a brilliant corporate lawyer. If she says she has a document... she really has it."
