Chapter 3 - The Threat Retracted

"You're going to ruin us," my mother whispered, her eyes wide with terror as she realized Aunt Marlene’s phone had caught every single word. "Emily, please. If this gets out, your father’s firm will lose its licensing. We will lose the house. We did it for the family. We did it for your sister!"
"You did it for yourselves," I said, packing the original documents back into my folder, leaving only the photocopies on the table. "You wanted the illusion of a perfect, wealthy family, and you used me as the foundation to build it on. The foundation is gone."
Dad stepped between me and the door, his chest heaving. The authoritarian judge who had commanded me to sit down at Christmas dinner was gone; in his place stood a desperate, cornered man. "Emily, think about what you're doing. If you walk out of here with those papers and go to the police, you will never see us again. We will completely cut you off."
I looked at him, and for the first time in my twenty-six years of life, I felt absolutely nothing. No guilt. No sorrow. No desire to beg for his approval.
"You cut me off a long time ago, Dad," I said quietly. "You just kept me around to pay the bill. Step out of my way."

He didn't move. But Aunt Marlene suddenly lowered her phone and stepped forward. "Move out of her way, Richard," she said, her voice shaking but resolute. "My God... we all sat at that dinner table and judged her. We thought she was just being an ungrateful, jealous sister. You lied to all of us."
With the family audience turning against him, Dad’s shoulders slumped. He stepped aside. I walked out of the boutique, the bell above the door chiming merrily, leaving the wreckage of their lies behind me.
