With the criminal case proceeding through the court system, Julian worked tirelessly to untangle the financial wreckage. Because the sale of Grandma’s house was deemed completely fraudulent, the court ordered a rescission of the property transfer.

Four months after that fateful Christmas dinner, I stood on the porch of my grandmother's old Victorian home. The key she had hidden in the gray safe box turned smoothly in the brass lock, and the heavy oak door swung open.

The house was empty, dust motes dancing in the afternoon sunlight streaming through the stained-glass windows, but it smelled of lavender, old books, and safety. This was the place where I had actually been loved.

Aunt Marlene walked up the steps behind me, carrying a box of cleaning supplies. Since the boutique video had exposed the truth, she and several other cousins had systematically cut ties with my parents, choosing instead to support me.

"I'm going to paint the kitchen yellow," I said, tears finally blurring my vision—not tears of sorrow, but of a clean slate. "Grandma always said yellow kitchens make the morning coffee taste better."
