Chapter 2 - Cold Diagnostics

The silence following the destruction of the security camera was heavy and suffocating. Down in the basement medical vault, the low hum of life-support monitors provided a rhythmic counterpoint to the howling blizzard outside.
Nathan stood over the examination table where the baby twins lay. While Rosa tended to Lily in the adjacent recovery bay, Nathan applied warm sterile gel to an ultrasound probe. His surgical instinct had taken over completely; emotion was set aside in favor of clinical precision.
As the ultrasound image materialized on the high-definition display, Nathan’s eyes narrowed. The babies’ livers and kidneys showed distinct micro-calcifications and structural inflammation inconsistent with simple cold exposure.
"This isn't just hypothermia," Nathan murmured to himself.
He immediately drew a small blood sample from infants' heels and inserted the vials into his automated toxicological analyzer. Within four minutes, the machine chimed, displaying a terrifying breakdown of chemical compounds: trace amounts of synthetic digitalis glycosides—a potent cardiac toxin that, in micro-doses, mimicked sudden infant death syndrome or severe environmental distress.
Marcus had not been relying solely on the blizzard. He was actively poisoning the children, ensuring that even if they survived the cold, their hearts would fail within hours.
Suddenly, the encrypted satellite phone he had taken from Lily’s coat vibrated in his pocket. Nathan answered, holding it tightly against his ear.
"Nathan?" A frail, terrified voice broke through the static. "Nathan, is that you?"
"Sarah," Nathan breathed, his chest tightening. "Where are you? The children are with me. They are alive."
A sob broke from Sarah’s throat over the line. "Thank God... Nathan, listen to me. Marcus found out about the offshore audit. He knows the federal investigators are closing in on his medical equipment firm. He needs the insurance payout tonight to liquidate his assets and buy his way out of the country. He has help inside the regional board—"

Before she could finish, a loud crash echoed from the upper floor of the estate. The heavy oak doors had been breached with explosive charges.
"Sarah, stay hidden. I’m locking down the vault," Nathan said coldly. "He’s inside the house."
