Chapter 7 - The Mastermind Unmasked

The two men tumbled through the waist-deep snow, fighting furiously against the backdrop of the roaring storm. Marcus, driven by sheer survival instinct, managed to pin Nathan down, pressing his forearm hard against Nathan’s throat.

"You always looked down on me, Nathan!" Marcus snarled, his breath steaming in the sub-zero air. "You and your high-and-mighty surgical career! You thought Sarah deserved better! But I owned her, and I own those kids!"

Nathan choked for air, his vision blurring. But his hands searched the snow beneath him, finding the sharp steel trauma shears he had kept in his outer coat pocket.

With a swift, precise motion, Nathan jammed the blunt-tipped shears into the soft tissue of Marcus’s shoulder, severing the brachial plexus nerve cluster.

Marcus screamed in agony as his right arm went completely limp, his grip loosening instantly. Nathan rolled over, knocking Marcus backward into the snowbank, and retrieved the medical kit.

"This was never just about you, Marcus," Nathan said, standing over him, his breathing heavy. "Who gave you the restricted digitalis compounds? Who signed off on the unverified medical riders?"

Bleeding and incapacitated in the snow, Marcus let out a bitter, shivering laugh. "Dr. Vance... your old department chairman at the University Hospital... He orchestrated the offshore accounts. He gets forty percent..."

Nathan’s mind raced. Dr. Arthur Vance—his former mentor who had forced Nathan out of hospital administration years ago. The conspiracy ran far deeper than a greedy husband; it was an organized medical fraud ring.
