Chapter 4 - The Voice in the Dark

Nathan retreated through a concealed service corridor back into the central security hub. The house was running on fifteen percent power. On the backup monitor, he watched Marcus pacing in his primary study, tearing open drawers and smashing hard drives.

Nathan patched his radio into the room’s internal intercom.

"Looking for these, Marcus?" Nathan’s voice resonated through the hidden speakers, calm and mocking.

Marcus spun around, pulling his weapon. "Nathan! Stop hiding like a coward! Hand over the children and the signed policy documents, and I’ll leave your estate intact!"

"You gave them digitalis, didn't you?" Nathan said, his voice dropping into an icy rage. "You poisoned your own sons to make the payout look like an accidental organ failure caused by hypothermia."

Marcus let out a callous chuckle. "They’re financial liabilities, Nathan. Sarah was getting soft, talking about divorce and asset split. That insurance money is worth fifty million dollars. Do you have any idea what I can build with that capital in South America?"

"You won't make it to the airport," Nathan replied. "I've already transmitted the raw toxicological data and the insurance contracts to the Federal Bureau of Investigation via satellite uplink."

Marcus’s face turned pale, then twisted into pure fury. "I'll kill you myself, Doctor!"
