Chapter 5 - The Siege of Blackwood Manor

Realizing he was trapped, Marcus dropped all subtlety. He instructed his remaining mercenary to plant industrial-grade breaching charges directly on the reinforced vault door down in the basement.
Nathan knew the vault door could withstand a blast, but the shockwaves would kill the fragile infants inside. He had to draw them away from the lower levels.
Intentionally exposing his position, Nathan smashed a decorative glass display in the grand library and ran toward the west wing glass conservatory.
"He's heading for the greenhouse!" the mercenary shouted, bounding up the stairs with Marcus right behind him.
Nathan reached the conservatory, a massive glass structure filled with rare botanical specimens, completely surrounded by the howling blizzard outside. He pulled a flares gun from the emergency wall kit, aiming it not at the men, but at the overhead structural supports covered in thick ice sheets.
As Marcus and his gunman burst through the double doors, guns raised, Nathan fired the magnesium flare directly into the central glass apex.

The high-heat explosive burst shattered the thermal glass ceiling. Tons of heavy ice, snow, and reinforced glass sheets collapsed inward like an avalanche, burying the mercenary instantly under a mountain of frozen debris.
Marcus barely managed to dive backward out of the doorway, bleeding from cuts across his face.
