Chapter 2 - The Midnight Ghost

Nicole did not take the main elevators down to the lobby. She knew the hotel’s security cameras were monitored by the front desk, where Brandon was likely still playing the doting groom to lingering guests.
Instead, she used the service corridor behind the ice machines, taking the carpeted stairs down to the basement parking garage. Her mother had taught her that every building had a backdoor, and every trap had a flaw: the people setting it always assumed their prey was stupid.
Her black Audi R8 sat quietly in the VIP section of the subterranean garage. She slid into the driver's seat, started the silent engine, and pulled out onto Michigan Avenue into the cool, rain-slicked Chicago night.
Her hands were completely steady on the steering wheel.
She pressed the hands-free button on her dash and dialed a number she knew by heart.
The phone rang four times before a gruff, gravelly voice answered.
"Nicole? It’s past midnight. Is everything all right at the reception?"
"Marcus," Nicole said, her voice dropping into a register so cold and firm that Marcus Vance, a veteran corporate attorney who had represented her mother for thirty years, paused on the other end of the line.
"Nicole? Where are you?"
"I’m in my car," she said, turning off the main avenue onto a quiet side street. "Brandon and his mother are attempting a corporate takeover of Crawford Systems. They have a keylogger on my personal machine, they’re targeting my mother's defense tech patents, and they planned to isolate me in Napa tomorrow to force a spousal proxy."
There was a five-second silence on the line.
"Did you sign the spousal proxy?" Marcus asked, his tone instantly shifting into battle mode.
"No," Nicole said. "I was hiding under the bed in the suite to surprise him when his mother walked in with his mistress—a woman named Veronica. They laid out the entire timeline in front of me."
A heavy sigh came over the speaker. "Thank God your mother made me put that three-tier authentication seal on her trust. Nicole, where are you going right now?"
"To my mother’s house in Lake Forest," Nicole said. "I need you to call our head of cybersecurity, David Chen. I want every administrative password for Crawford Systems rotated before 3:00 AM. I want all remote access from Brandon’s corporate email suspended, and I want an immediate forensic mirror of my home laptop."
"Consider it done," Marcus said firmly. "What about Brandon?"
"Brandon thinks I’m still upstairs in the honeymoon suite, waiting for him in my wedding dress," Nicole said, a slow, icy smile touching her lips. "Let him go up. Let him find the empty dress."
"Nicole, if we cut his access tonight, he’ll know you’re onto them," Marcus warned. "They’ll trigger whatever backup legal play they have."
"No," Nicole replied smoothly. "If we cut his access quietly, he’ll think it’s a routine IT maintenance lock. I want him confident, Marcus. I want him to think his little plan is still moving forward until the second the trap closes around his neck."
She hung up the phone as she pulled into the long, iron-gated driveway of her mother’s estate in Lake Forest.
The stone house sat quietly under the canopy of old oak trees. For three years, this house had felt like a tomb of memories. But tonight, as Nicole unlocked the heavy oak front door and stepped inside, the house didn't feel like a tomb anymore.
It felt like an armory.
She walked directly into her mother’s private study, unlocked the floor safe behind the mahogany bookcase, and pulled out a thick red leather ledger. Inside were Elaine Crawford’s private notes on every investor, partner, and competitor who had ever tried to compromise Crawford Systems.
On page forty-two, written in her mother’s sharp, decisive handwriting, was a single entry:
Mitchell Capital Group. Patricia Mitchell. High leverage, predatory short-selling, offshore entities in Grand Cayman. DO NOT ENGAGE.

Nicole touched her mother's handwriting gently.
"You knew," Nicole whispered. "You knew what they were long before they came for me."
