Chapter 3 - The Empty Suite

At 12:45 AM, Brandon Mitchell unlocked the door to the honeymoon suite at the Drake Hotel.
He was carrying a silver bucket with a chilled bottle of Dom Pérignon and two crystal flutes. His tuxedo jacket was unbuttoned, his tie slightly loosened, his expression relaxed into the handsome, effortless charm that had won over boardrooms and grieving heiresses alike.
"Nic?" he called out softly, setting the champagne bucket on the entryway console. "Sorry I took so long downstairs. Senator Higgins wanted to talk about the cyber-defense bill."
No answer.
Brandon walked into the living area of the suite. The ambient lighting was dim.
"Nicole?"
He stepped into the master bedroom.
The king-sized bed was untouched, but lying in the center of the white duvet was Nicole’s silk wedding dress, neatly spread out like a ghost. Her lace veil lay beside it, along with her diamond wedding ring sitting directly on top of the lace bodice.
Brandon’s smile faltered.
He walked over to the bed, picking up the heavy diamond band.
Beneath the ring was a small, folded piece of thick ivory cardstock—the stationary from the hotel desk.
Brandon opened it. Written in crisp, black ink were four words:
Check the keylogger, Brandon.
Brandon felt the blood drain from his face so fast he nearly dropped the ring.
He spun around, grabbing his phone from his pocket, his hands suddenly shaking violently. He dialed his mother’s number.
"Mother!" Brandon yelled the moment she picked up.
"Brandon? What’s wrong? Did you get her to take the sedatives?" Patricia asked from her car.
"She’s gone!" Brandon panicked, pacing across the silk rug. "Her dress is on the bed! Her ring is on the dress! She left a note... she knows about the keylogger!"
"What?!" Patricia’s voice shrieked through the speaker. "How could she know about the keylogger?! Did you leave your secondary laptop open?!"
"No! I didn't leave anything open!" Brandon shouted, his composure completely shattering. "She left her ring! She knows everything, Mother!"
"Shut up and think!" Patricia commanded, though her own voice held an unusual edge of panic. "Where could she go? To her lawyer?"
"Marcus Vance," Brandon stammered. "If she went to Vance, he’ll freeze the trust proxies before morning! We won't be able to touch the defense patents!"
"Listen to me," Patricia said, her tone dropping into a fierce, desperate whisper. "Vance can’t move without a formal board quorum. We still hold twelve percent of the proxy seats through our shell entity. Call Veronica. Tell her to activate the media leak immediately."
"The media leak?" Brandon asked, sweating through his silk shirt. "Mother, if we drop the story now—"
"If we drop the story that Nicole Crawford suffered a mental breakdown on her wedding night and fled into the night, it creates immediate doubt about her corporate competency!" Patricia hissed. "We file for emergency receivership first thing at 8:00 AM! We frame her as unstable! If the court freezes her voting rights, the board defaults to the secondary administrative committee—which we control!"

Brandon looked at the empty dress lying on the bed.
"Do it," Brandon whispered. "Tell Veronica to release the story."
