Chapter 9 - The Cottage by the Lake

Two years later.
The morning sun filtered through the tall pine trees surrounding a serene, private estate on the shores of Lake Geneva, Wisconsin.
A beautiful timber-frame home stood near the water’s edge, its wide porch overlooking a clear blue lake where small waves lapped against a wooden dock.
Nicole stood on the porch, wearing a soft cream knit sweater and linen trousers, holding a steaming mug of tea. Her skin was glowing, her dark eyes filled with deep, uninterrupted peace.
From inside the house came the sound of a child’s soft laughter.
Alexander walked out onto the porch, carrying their eight-month-old daughter, Clara—named after Nicole’s grandmother. Clara had big brown eyes, soft dark curls, and a laugh that echoed across the quiet water.
"Look who woke up early," Alex smiled, leaning down to kiss Nicole’s forehead before settling Clara gently onto Nicole’s lap as they sat together on the porch swing.
"Good morning, my sweet girl," Nicole whispered, nuzzling Clara’s soft cheek as the baby giggled, clutching at Nicole’s golden necklace.
The wooden swing swayed gently in the cool summer breeze.
Nicole looked down at her hand. She wore a simple, elegant platinum band—a ring that had not been bought for publicity, strategic leverage, or social standing, but given to her on this very dock on a quiet Sunday morning with only Marcus and her close friends present.
Her phone buzzed softly on the side table.
It was an email notification from Marcus Vance:
Nicole—Final legal notice attached. Mitchell Capital Group’s remaining assets have been fully liquidated by federal bankruptcy court. The remaining funds ($1.2 million) have been transferred to the Elaine Crawford Foundation for Women in Technology.
Nicole scanned the email, then deleted it. She didn't need to read the details. The past was no longer a shadow that chased her; it was simply a closed chapter in a book she had long since finished reading.

"Everything okay?" Alex asked softly, wrapping his arm around her waist.
"Everything is perfect," Nicole said, turning her head to rest her cheek against his shoulder.
