Chapter 5 - The Glass House Crumbles

The boardroom was in absolute chaos.

"This recording is illegal!" Patricia shouted, slamming her palms onto the table, her smooth facade finally shattering into raw, venomous rage. "Illinois is a two-party consent state! That audio is inadmissible in any court of law!"

Marcus Vance stepped forward, pulling a document from his briefcase with a cool, practiced smile.

"Under Illinois law, Mrs. Mitchell, two-party consent does not apply when the recording captures the commission of a felony involving corporate espionage on private property," Marcus said smoothly. "And furthermore, we didn't just record your voice."

Marcus tapped his tablet. The screen shifted from the audio file to a series of live bank transfer logs.

"At 6:00 AM this morning," Marcus continued, "federal prosecutors executed a search warrant on Mitchell Capital Group's servers based on an anonymous forensic tip provided by Crawford Systems' cybersecurity team. They found three offshore accounts in the Cayman Islands containing four million dollars in stolen corporate IP advances from Crawford Systems' defense sector."

Brandon fell back into his leather chair, staring at the screen as if his own execution date had just been announced.

"Brandon..." Patricia whispered, looking at her son in pure panic. "What did you do?"

"He didn't do it alone, Patricia," Nicole said, walking around the table until she stood directly behind Brandon’s chair. She leaned down, her voice dropping into a whisper right beside his ear. "Did you really think I didn't know about Veronica? She was on your payroll at Mitchell Capital for eighteen months before you even met me at that charity gala."

Brandon turned his head slowly, looking up at Nicole with terrified, bloodshot eyes. "Nic... please... I loved you... I was forced into this by my mother! She managed the debt! She made me do it!"

"You cowardly little boy," Patricia spat, turning her rage on her own son. "I built you! I gave you everything!"

"Officers," Nicole said calmly, turning to the two police officers standing at the door. "Mr. Mitchell and Mrs. Mitchell are currently under federal indictment for corporate theft and illegal wiretapping. Please remove them from my building."

The two officers stepped forward, pulling silver handcuffs from their belts.

"Get your hands off me!" Patricia screamed as the cold steel snapped around her wrists. "Do you know who I am?! I will ruin you, Nicole! I will destroy Crawford Systems!"

"You couldn't even manage your own son, Patricia," Nicole said softly, watching as the officers marched Patricia and Brandon toward the glass doors. "You certainly couldn't manage me."

As Brandon was led past her, he stopped, looking back at Nicole with tears streaming down his face. "Nicole... please... don't do this... I have nowhere to go!"

Nicole looked at the man she had almost given her life to. She felt no anger, no heartbreak, no betrayal anymore.

May you like

Only a vast, beautiful emptiness.

"You have court, Brandon," Nicole said. "Don't be late."
