Chapter 6 - The Unraveling Thread

The news of Brandon and Patricia Mitchell’s arrest sent shockwaves through Chicago's financial elite.

Within forty-eight hours, the narrative flipped completely. The financial blogs that had run headlines about Nicole’s 'mental breakdown' were forced to issue public retractions and apologies as federal prosecutors held a press conference detailing the multi-million-dollar corporate fraud scheme orchestrated by Mitchell Capital Group.

In a small, windowless interrogation room at the federal courthouse, Veronica sat shivering under the harsh fluorescent lights, her designer clothes rumpled, her mascara smeared across her face.

Across the table sat Marcus Vance and a senior federal prosecutor.

"We have your text messages with Brandon, Miss Vance," the prosecutor said, sliding a thick printout across the table. "We have the keylogger installation logs from your personal IP address. You are facing up to twelve years in federal prison as a co-conspirator."

Veronica wept, pressing her face into her hands. "It was Patricia! It was all Patricia! She promised me that if Brandon got the patents, she would give me a twenty-percent stake in the offshore shell company! She told me Nicole was weak! She said Nicole was an idiot who would sign anything!"

"And Brandon?" Marcus asked quietly.

"Brandon is a coward!" Veronica sobbed. "He didn't love her, but he didn't love me either! He only loved his mother's money! He was terrified of Patricia! Please... please tell Nicole I'm sorry! I’ll testify against them! I’ll give you everything!"

Marcus stood up, closing his leather folder.

"Nicole doesn't need your apology, Veronica," Marcus said coldly. "She needs your testimony."

That evening, Nicole sat alone in her mother’s study in Lake Forest. The rain tapped softly against the windowpanes, casting long, peaceful shadows across the oak floor.

She opened her mother’s red leather journal to the final blank page.

She picked up a pen and wrote a single line beneath her mother's notes:

The trap is cleared. Crawford Systems belongs to the family again.

May you like

She closed the book, pulled off her mother’s ring from her middle finger, and held it up to the warm firelight. For the first time in three years, the weight in her chest didn't feel like grief.

It felt like victory.
