Chapter 4 - The Boardroom Ambush

At 8:00 AM the following morning, the top floor of the Crawford Systems Tower in downtown Chicago was surrounded by news vans.
Headlines had erupted across financial blogs and local news channels at dawn:
HERITAGE HEIRESS FLEES WEDDING NIGHT: INSIDERS CLAIM NICOLE CRAWFORD SUFFERING SEVERE MENTAL BREAKDOWN FOLLOWING MOTHER'S PASSING.
Inside the executive boardroom, Patricia Mitchell sat at the end of the thirty-foot glass table, wearing a dark gray Chanel suit, her red-soled heels resting quietly against the carpet. Beside her sat Brandon, wearing a immaculate dark suit, looking stoic, solemn, and deeply grieving for the cameras.
Across from them sat five independent board members, looking nervous and confused.
"Thank you all for coming on such short notice," Patricia said smoothly, folding her hands over a leather folder. "As you have no doubt seen in the press, my daughter-in-law Nicole has suffered a tragic, acute emotional relapse. She abandoned her wedding suite last night, left her ring, and has cut off all communication with her family."
"It’s heart-breaking," Brandon added, squeezing his eyes shut as if fighting back tears. "She’s been struggling with the anniversary of her mother’s death. But as her husband, my primary duty is to protect her... and to protect the company her mother built."
One of the board members, a senior director named Arthur Pendelton, frowned. "Brandon, you’ve been married for less than twelve hours. You don't have legal standing to request an emergency receivership without a medical evaluation."
"We have her personal medical records from her doctor following Elaine’s passing," Patricia lied seamlessly, sliding a blue folder toward Pendelton. "Along with sworn statements from hotel staff detailing her erratic behavior last night. Under Section 4 of the Crawford Systems bylaws, if the principal shareholder is declared temporarily incapacitated, the spousal administrative committee assumes emergency voting control to protect pending government contracts."
"And who authorized that committee?" a quiet, clear voice asked from the back of the room.
The heavy glass doors of the boardroom swung open.
Every head in the room turned.
Nicole walked into the boardroom.
She was wearing a tailored white pantsuit—the exact shade of her mother’s famous victory suit from the 2018 federal defense hearings. Her dark hair was slicked back into a sharp bun, her makeup was flawless, and her eyes burned with an icy, terrifying composure.
Walking behind her was Marcus Vance, carrying three leather briefcases, flanked by two uniformed officers from the Chicago Police Department Financial Crimes Unit.
Brandon gasped, half-rising from his chair. "Nicole?! You... you’re supposed to be—"
"In a psychiatric facility?" Nicole completed his sentence, stepping smoothly to the head of the table. She didn't look at Brandon; her eyes were locked entirely on Patricia. "Or perhaps isolated in a cottage in Napa, signing away my mother's life's work while your son feeds me sedatives?"
Patricia’s posture stiffened, but her expression remained an icy mask. "Nicole, darling, you're clearly hysterical. Look at you—you’re paranoid. We are only here to help you—"
"Save it, Patricia," Nicole said, tapping a silver remote on the table.
The large projector screen at the front of the boardroom flickered to life.
An audio file began playing through the high-definition boardroom speakers. The audio was crystal clear, recorded from the high-grade security mic inside Nicole’s personal laptop, which had been active beneath the nightstand in the honeymoon suite:
“He married access. There is a difference... Two years of watching him play house with her... Once the transfer is complete, Brandon will file for divorce on grounds of mental instability...”
Patricia’s face turned from pale to ash-gray.
Brandon’s mouth hung open, his hands shaking so violently he knocked his glass of water onto the glass table.

"What... what is that?" Arthur Pendelton asked, his jaw dropping as he listened to Patricia’s recorded voice echoing through the room.
"That," Nicole said, looking down at Brandon with absolute disgust, "is a federal recording of conspiracy to commit corporate fraud, wire fraud, and illegal keylogger espionage."
