Chapter 8 - The True Partner

Six months after the trial, Crawford Systems announced the launch of its new defense technology platform—the Elaine Series—a ground-breaking cyber-shield system that secured government servers against international espionage.
The launch party was held at the Art Institute of Chicago, in the luminous glass courtyard overlooking the city skyline.
Nicole stood near the grand fountain, wearing an elegant emerald green gown. Her hair fell in soft, radiant waves over her shoulders, and her smile was genuine, warm, and entirely unburdened.
Walking up to her, carrying two glasses of sparkling mineral water, was Alexander Vance—Marcus Vance’s youngest partner, a brilliant thirty-four-year-old intellectual property attorney who had spent six months working sixteen-hour days alongside Nicole to untangle her mother’s patents from Mitchell Capital’s offshore web.
Unlike Brandon, Alexander was quiet, razor-sharp, and completely unbothered by powerful women. He didn't bring her performative flowers; he brought her ironclad patent filings, cold espresso at 2:00 AM, and a deep, unwavering respect for her mind.
"You look breathtaking, Nicole," Alexander said, handing her a glass with a quiet, warm smile.
"Thank you, Alex," Nicole said, taking a sip. "How are the Q2 numbers looking?"
"The board just unanimously approved the European expansion," Alex replied, stepping closer to her, his dark eyes fixed on hers. "And for the record... your mother’s trust is officially sixty percent larger than it was when Mitchell Capital tried to take it."
Nicole looked out through the glass wall at the Chicago skyline.
"She would have loved this," Nicole whispered softly.
"She would have been proud of you," Alex corrected gently. "Not because of the company's valuation... but because you fought for yourself."
Nicole looked at Alex, seeing the honesty and quiet strength in his eyes—a strength that didn't demand control, didn't ask for surrender, and didn't hide behind lies.
"Are you free this weekend?" Alex asked softly. "No legal filings, no board meetings. Just dinner. Somewhere quiet."

Nicole smiled—a real, effortless smile that reached all the way to her eyes.
"I’d like that, Alex," she said. "I’d really like that."
