Chapter 9 - The Legacy of Truth

As the afternoon sun cast long golden shadows across the lawn, Nathan Briggs walked onto the porch, handing Dominic a secure folder.

"It’s official, Boss," Nathan reported. "The federal trials in New York and Philly are completely concluded. Valenti and Moretti have been transferred to maximum-security federal penitentiaries. The organization is completely secure."

Dominic closed the folder, setting it aside.

"Good," Dominic said. "Then we close that chapter forever."

He stood up and walked toward the edge of the porch, calling out to the girls. "Sophie! Lucy! Time for ice cream!"

Both little girls squealed with joy, leaving the puppy on the lawn as they sprinted toward the house.

Sophie ran up the wooden steps first, but stopped, waiting for little Lucy to catch up. She took Lucy by the hand, helping her up the last step, treating her not as a maid's child, but as her own little sister.

Dominic knelt down, gathering both girls into a big hug.

"Daddy," Sophie smiled, looking into his eyes. "Lucy says she wants to be a detective when she grows up."

Dominic looked at three-year-old Lucy, whose chocolate-smears were now replaced by bright, sparkling laughter.

"I think she'd be the best detective in the world," Dominic said softly, kissing the top of Lucy’s head.
