Chapter 1 - The Echoes of the Past

The morning sun rose fully, painting the horizon in shades of gold and amber. On the private beach of the Moretti estate, Bella lay in Leo’s arms, the weight of the platinum ring on her finger a sweet, grounding reality. The storm of her past—the long, grueling shifts at the café, the constant fear of eviction, the feeling of being utterly alone in a cold city—felt like a lifetime away.

But as they walked hand-in-hand back up the winding cliffside path, the reality of their world began to settle in. Waiting at the top of the cliff was Marco, his usual stoic face tight with an underlying tension that Leo noticed immediately.

"Congratulations, Boss, Bella," Marco said, offering a respectful nod, but his eyes briefly darted to Leo with a silent, urgent message.

Leo pressed a gentle kiss to Bella’s forehead. "Go inside with Francesca, mia cara. Eat some breakfast. I need to speak with Marco for a moment."

Bella sensed the shift in the air. The warmth of the proposal was instantly met with the cold draft of Leo’s responsibilities. She nodded, offering a reassuring smile. "Don't be too long, Leo. Your lemon ricotta cake is still waiting for you."

Once Bella was out of earshot, walking into the grand villa with Francesca, Leo’s relaxed posture vanished. The soft, tender man who had knelt in the sand was gone, replaced instantly by the formidable Don of the Moretti syndicate.

"Speak," Leo commanded, his voice cold and sharp.

"We found a transmitter on the outer perimeter of the estate last night," Marco reported, handing Leo a small, sealed bag containing a high-tech tracking device. "It was planted during the storm. It’s not local syndicate tech. It’s military-grade. And that’s not all. A message was delivered to our front gate at dawn. No courier, just a black envelope."

Leo tore open the envelope. Inside was a single piece of heavy cardstock with a crest he hadn't seen in over a decade—the crest of the Romano family, the ruthless clan that had supposedly been wiped out during the turf wars of his father's era.

Written in elegant, crimson ink were the words: “The queen’s throne is built on ashes, Leo. We have come to reclaim the fire.”

Leo’s hand clenched around the paper, crushing it into a tight ball. The Romanos were back, and they had targeted the estate on the exact night he proposed. Bella was no longer just a girl he loved; she was now the primary target for anyone looking to destroy him.
