Chapter 7 - The Confrontation at Pier 14

The rain had returned, pouring down in heavy sheets that blurred the neon lights of the harbor. Pier 14 was a maze of rusted shipping containers and towering cranes.
Bella was forced toward the gangway of a massive, black cargo ship. The cold rain soaked her clothes, but she kept her chin high, refusing to show the terror that was clawing at her chest.
Suddenly, the headlights of five black SUVs cut through the darkness, blinding the guards. The vehicles tore onto the pier, drifting into a perfect defensive crescent, cutting off any escape.
The door of the lead SUV opened. Leo stepped out into the pouring rain. He wore no jacket, his black shirt soaked and clinging to his frame. In his hand, he carried a heavy automatic rifle, but it was his eyes that made Julian’s guards take an involuntary step backward. He looked like death itself, walking out of the underworld.
"Julian!" Leo’s voice boomed over the sound of the rain and the roaring engine of the ship. "Let her go, and I will let your men live to see the sunrise. Hurt her, and this harbor becomes your graveyard."
Julian pulled Bella in front of him, pressing the cold barrel of a pistol against her temple. "Step back, Moretti! One move and I blow her brains out! You think you own this city? The Romanos built this harbor! Drop your weapons, or she dies!"
Bella looked across the distance, her eyes meeting Leo’s. Despite the gun at her head, she didn't cry. She shook her head. "Leo! Don't let him win! I’m not afraid!"
Leo looked at her, and in that split second, a silent communication passed between them. A deep, unbreakable trust. He lowered his rifle slightly.
"You want the territory, Julian?" Leo asked, his voice deceptively calm as he took a slow step forward. "Take it. I’ll sign the deeds tonight. Just let her walk to me."
"Drop the gun first!" Julian screamed, his grip on Bella tightening.
As Julian shifted his weight to yell, his boot slipped slightly on the wet, metal deck of the gangway. It was the only opening Bella needed.

Using all her strength, she threw her head backward, slamming it into Julian’s nose. A sickening crack echoed, and Julian shrieked in pain, his grip loosening. Bella instantly dropped to the deck, rolling away.
"Fire!" Leo roared.
