Chapter 2 - The Fortress on the Hill

The drive lasted for nearly forty minutes, moving away from the gray, slush-filled streets of the working-class districts and winding up into the secluded, heavily forested hills overlooking the ocean. The Moretti Estate was less of a house and more of an old-world fortress. High stone walls topped with wrought-iron spikes surrounded the perimeter, and heavily armed security guards stood at the massive front gates, waving the limousine through after a swift biometric scan.

When the car finally stopped, Bella stepped out onto a pristine brick courtyard. Waiting at the top of the grand marble steps was Francesca Moretti.

Today, she wasn't wearing the wet, torn grocery bags or the damp coat. She was dressed in a magnificent, deep navy blue silk dress, her silver hair styled in a flawless, elegant crown. Yet, her eyes—the same soft, observant eyes Bella had seen in the rain—warmed up the moment she saw the young barista.

"Bella, my dear," Francesca said, walking down the steps with a cane topped by a silver wolf's head. "You look frozen. Come inside. The tea is already steeping."

Bella walked into the grand foyer, her jaw nearly dropping at the sight of the vaulted ceilings, the crystal chandeliers, and the priceless Renaissance paintings lining the walls. It felt like walking into a museum, except the air smelled of burning cherrywood and expensive floral perfume.

Francesca led her into a sunlit conservatory filled with exotic orchids and white roses. A silver tea service sat on a glass table.

"Sit, please," Francesca insisted, pouring a cup of chamomile tea and pushing it toward Bella. "I must apologize for the dramatic entrance of my men this morning. My son, Leo, insists on extreme security measures. He thinks everyone in this city is an assassin."

"It's... it's fine, Mrs. Moretti," Bella said, holding the warm porcelain cup to soothe her freezing fingers. "I was just shocked. I didn't realize who you were yesterday. I just saw someone who needed a hand."

"And that is precisely why you are here," Francesca said, her expression turning serious. "In my world, Bella, people only move when there is profit, power, or fear involved. Hundreds of people walked past me yesterday. Some looked at me with disgust. Some looked at me like I was a ghost. But you—you sacrificed your own comfort, risked your job, and knelt in the mud for a stranger. That kind of purity cannot be bought. And in my house, it must be protected."

Before Bella could respond, the heavy oak doors of the conservatory swung open. A man stepped into the room, and the air instantly grew tense.

He was tall, broad-shouldered, and dressed in a dark, tailored charcoal suit that fit his athletic frame perfectly. His hair was pitch-black, combed back neatly, and his eyes were a piercing, stormy gray. He radiated a dangerous, predatory energy that made Bella’s pulse spike instantly.

"Mother," the man said, his voice a deep, gravelly rasp that sent a shiver down Bella’s spine. "You brought an outsider into the sanctuary. We discussed this."
