Chapter 2 - A Golden Cage

Within twenty-four hours, the estate was transformed into an impenetrable fortress. Security patrols doubled, thermal cameras were installed along the cliffs, and Bella found herself unable to step foot outside the main villa without a minimum of four armed guards flanking her.

At first, she understood. Leo explained that "security adjustments" were necessary. But by the third day, the isolation began to suffocate her. She sat in the grand library, looking out the massive glass windows at the ocean below. She missed the simple noise of the city, the smell of roasted coffee beans, and the feeling of the wind on her face without a security detail assessing every breeze for threat levels.

"You look like you're plotting a jailbreak," Francesca said, entering the library with a tray of fresh chamomile tea.

Bella sighed, turning away from the window. "Is it that obvious, Francesca? I love Leo. I would marry him in a shack. But this... this feels like I’ve traded one kind of survival for another. I went from being trapped by poverty to being trapped by luxury."

"Leo is terrified of losing you, Bella," Francesca said softly, sitting beside her. "Before you, he had nothing to lose. A man with nothing to lose is invincible. But now? You are his heart walking around outside his chest. He knows his enemies see you as his only weakness."

"I don't want to be his weakness," Bella said, her voice rising with sudden determination. "I want to be his partner. I stopped to pick up those oranges in the rain because I wasn't afraid of a little storm. I need him to see that I’m not made of glass."

Her resolve was put to the test that evening during dinner. Leo sat at the head of the long mahogany table, his phone buzzing incessantly beside his plate. He looked exhausted, the dark circles under his eyes returning.

"Leo," Bella started gently. "I want to go to the city tomorrow. I want to visit the old café. I want to see Mr. Bianchi. It's been weeks since I've checked on him."

Leo stopped cutting his steak. He looked up, his expression unreadable. "No, Bella. It’s not safe. The city is... volatile right now. You stay here."

"I can't live like a prisoner, Leo," she replied, her voice firm. "Even a beloved one. If I am to be your wife, I need to live my life, not hide from it."

May you like

"I am keeping you alive!" Leo’s voice cracked through the dining room like thunder. The servants instantly froze, bowing their heads and quickly exiting.

Bella didn't flinch. She looked directly into his fierce, dark eyes. "Is this keeping me alive, or is it keeping your fears at ease? There is a difference, Leo."
