Chapter 5 - Whispers in the Dark

Two weeks passed.
Khloe was finally discharged from the hospital, though she remained on strict bed rest at the Thorne estate—a sprawling, highly secured property in the hills overlooking the ocean. Marcus had transformed the master suite into a state-of-the-art recovery room, complete with round-the-clock nursing care.
Despite the security, a subtle sense of unease hung over the house.
Late one evening, while Khloe was resting, Marcus sat in his home study, looking over security reports. A quiet knock sounded at the door. Jonathan Vance stepped inside, holding an encrypted sat-phone.
"Marcus," Jonathan said, shutting the door behind him. "We have a problem."
Marcus raised his head. "Speak."
"Elaine Parker posted bail yesterday through a third-party bail bondsman," Jonathan revealed. "We tracked the funding back to a shell corporation based in Panama. It wasn't Victor Rossi who paid it."
Marcus’s eyes narrowed. "Victor doesn't have the cash left to fund a legal team, let alone an offshore shell company. Who paid it?"
"We don't know yet," Jonathan admitted gravely. "But Elaine disappeared twenty minutes after walking out of the jail. She cut her ankle monitor. Federal marshals are searching for her, but she had help."
Marcus stood up, his jaw set. "Isabella is still in solitary confinement?"
"Yes. But Elaine knows the layout of your estate. She was the one who managed the event logistics here last summer. She knows the blind spots."
Suddenly, the lights in the study flickered and died. The entire estate was instantly plunged into total darkness.
Outside, the gentle hum of the property's main power grid cut off, replaced by the deep, throating roar of backup generators kicking in three seconds later. The emergency red lights illuminated the hallways.
Marcus pulled a concealed firearm from his desk drawer, his heart hammering against his ribs. "Jonathan, call the perimeter security team. Get to Khloe's room now!"
Marcus sprinted down the long, dimly lit corridor toward the master bedroom. His instincts, honed by years of managing high-risk global operations, screamed that this power failure was no accident.
He threw the bedroom door open.
Khloe was sitting up in bed, looking terrified in the red emergency light, holding a blanket over her chest. The private nurse on duty was standing near the window, holding a heavy glass vase as a weapon.
"Marcus!" Khloe cried.
"I'm here," Marcus said, stepping beside her bed and standing guard before the door. "Stay calm. The backup generators are up."

Before anyone could move, the bedroom door swung wider, and a figure stepped into the doorway, bathed in the crimson emergency light. It was Elaine Parker, dressed in dark clothing, her eyes wild and bloodshot, holding a heavy metal crowbar.
"Elaine," Marcus said, raising his weapon with absolute precision, pointing it directly at her chest. "Take one more step, and I will end you."
