Chapter 7 - The Trial of Silence

Six weeks later, the formal trial of Isabella Rossi finally commenced at the state supreme courthouse.
The public interest was unprecedented. Because of the overwhelming digital evidence, the trial moved at a breakneck speed. Isabella’s legal team tried every tactic—claiming temporary insanity, extreme emotional distress, and even claiming the surveillance video was tampered with by Marcus's tech team.
On the fifth day of the trial, Khloe Thorne walked into the courtroom to testify.
She was eight and a half months pregnant now, her belly visibly round beneath a tasteful lilac maternity dress. She walked with quiet, regal dignity, supported by Marcus at her side until she reached the witness stand.
The courtroom fell into absolute silence as Khloe took the oath and sat down. Across the room, Isabella sat in her orange jumpsuit, staring at her shoes, unable to meet Khloe’s calm, clear eyes.
The lead prosecutor stepped forward. "Mrs. Thorne, can you describe for the jury what happened when Isabella Rossi entered your hospital suite on the night of the gala?"
Khloe took a slow, deep breath. Her voice was steady, resonating clearly through the acoustics of the room.
"I was resting after feeling exhausted from the event," Khloe began. "Ms. Rossi came into the room uninvited. She told me that I didn't belong in Marcus's world. She told me I was just an incubator for an heir, and that I should disappear."
Gasps rippled through the gallery.
"When I asked her to leave," Khloe continued, "she pushed me into a marble table. And when I fell... she walked up to me, looked into my eyes, and kicked me in the side with her heel."
The prosecutor turned to the jury. "And what were you thinking in that moment, Mrs. Thorne?"
"I wasn't thinking about myself," Khloe said, her voice soft yet filled with unshakeable strength. "I was covering my child. I was praying that my baby would survive the hatred of a woman who thought money made her immune to humanity."
The prosecutor nodded. "Thank you, Mrs. Thorne. No further questions."
Isabella’s defense lawyer stood up slowly, looked at the jury, looked at Khloe’s calm, composed posture, and then at the unanimous disgust on the faces of the twelve jury members. He sighed, turning to the judge.
"The defense waives cross-examination, Your Honor."
Two days later, the jury returned with a verdict in under forty-five minutes.
"On the charge of attempted murder in the first degree—Guilty. On the charge of aggravated assault—Guilty."

The judge looked down at Isabella Rossi with severe eyes. "Isabella Rossi, your actions were born out of pure malice, arrogance, and a callous disregard for human life. You believed your family's wealth placed you above the law. You were wrong. I sentence you to twenty-five years in state prison, without the possibility of parole for the first twenty years."
Isabella wept silently as the handcuffs were clicked around her wrists, her high-society dreams crushed into dust forever.
