Chapter 1 - Descent into the Shadow

The deafening roar of the security alarms echoed through the high-tensile reinforced concrete of the emergency stairwell. Dust rained down from the ceiling as distant impacts shuddered through the tower frame.
Adrian Cole didn't look back. His hand was locked firmly around Maya’s wrist, his tall frame leaning heavily over her to form a human shield against potential shrapnel. His polished leather shoes clicked with rhythmic precision against the cold steel stairs, but his eyes never left the woman beside him, whose breath came in short, terrified gasps.
"Adrian," Maya gasped, her hand instinctively pressing against her abdomen as another wave of shockwaves shook the structure. "The elevator... why aren't we taking the private lift?"
"The elevator shafts are death traps when an automated lockdown is triggered," Adrian said, his voice flat, devoid of panic, yet vibrating with an underlying lethality that made the air feel thin. "If they cut the main grid, we drop fifty floors. We go down to the subterranean vault level. Grant has two armored sub-compacts waiting."
Grant Mercer descended two steps ahead of them, his drawn custom tactical sidearm pointed into the gloom below. Behind them, four heavily armed security operatives in black tactical gear formed a tight rear guard, their eyes scanning the emergency exit doors at every landing.
Maya felt a sharp, hard kick against her ribs from the inside. She winced, stumbling slightly.
In a fraction of a second, Adrian’s arm slid around her waist, taking her full weight without a single sign of exertion. He brought her flush against his chest, his eyes burning into hers.
"Are you hit?" he demanded, his gaze sweeping over her cream-colored dress, looking for any trace of red.
"No," Maya whispered, her heart hammering wildly against her ribs. "She's... she's kicking. She's terrified, Adrian."
Adrian froze for a fraction of a heartbeat. His gloved hand, cold from the icy air of the stairwell, shifted down to hover just above her belly. Through the fabric of her dress, he felt a distinct, firm nudge from within. The cold, unyielding mob boss who had spent fifteen years building an empire on fear suddenly looked utterly shattered.
"She's strong," Adrian murmured, his voice dropping an octave, meant only for her ears amid the blaring sirens. "Like her mother."
"Don't do that," Maya said, her voice trembling with a mix of fury and fear as she pulled away slightly, though she kept her hold on his shoulder for support. "Don't pretend you care about us now. You cut me out of your life three months ago. You tried to erase me with a legal document!"
"I tried to keep you out of a grave, Maya!" Adrian snapped back, his composure cracking for the first time as they reached the thirty-fifth floor landing. "You think I wanted to sign those papers? You think I wanted to wake up every morning in an empty house, knowing you were across the country hating me?"
"You didn't ask me!" she yelled back over the sound of a heavy explosion echoing from the upper floors. "You made a decision about my life without my consent!"
"Because if I asked, you would have stayed!" Adrian roared, his dark eyes ablaze. "And if you stayed, they would have found a way to use you against me months ago!"
"Boss!" Grant shouted from below, his voice cutting through their argument like a razor. "We’ve got movement on the landing of floor thirty. Heavy armor. They breached the secondary perimeter!"
May you like
Adrian immediately shielded Maya behind his back, his own sidearm clearing his coat in a single fluid motion. "Hold the line," he commanded his men. "Maya, stay behind me. Don't look, don't step away."
The heavy steel doors of the thirty-floor landing were blown inward with a flash of heat and blinding light.
