Chapter 6 - The Emergency Suite

The unmarked ambulance sped through the backstreets of Pilsen, bypassing the main avenues filled with police cruisers and emergency vehicles heading toward the downtown tower.

Inside the back of the vehicle, the air was warm, filled with the sharp scent of antiseptics and monitoring equipment.

Dr. Aris quickly attached heart monitors to Maya, his brow furrowed in deep concentration as he examined the portable ultrasound screen.

"Her blood pressure is dangerously high," Dr. Aris reported, looking up at Adrian, who was standing over the bed, his face pale and covered in soot. "The physical exertion and acute psychological trauma have accelerated the labor. She is fully dilated, Adrian. The baby is coming right now."

Maya gripped the edge of the mattress, her knuckles turning white as another intense contraction seized her body. "Adrian..." she screamed through her teeth, her legs shaking violently. "It hurts... it hurts so much!"

Adrian dropped to his knees beside the gurney, ignoring the nurses who tried to move him out of the way. He took both of her trembling hands in his, pressing them against his face, his tears mixing with the dust and blood on his skin.

"I'm here, Maya," he pleaded, his voice cracking with an emotion he had suppressed for years. "Look at me. Look into my eyes. Don't look at the monitors. Just look at me."

Maya opened her eyes, finding his dark, intense gaze amidst the chaotic haze of pain.

"You are the strongest woman I have ever known," Adrian whispered, leaning close so his breath brushed against her cheek. "You survived three months without me. You survived this day. You are going to bring our daughter into this world, and I am never going to let anything harm either of you again."

"You... you promise?" she sobbed, holding onto his hands as if he were her only anchor in a storm. "No more lies? No more legal separation? No more hiding?"

"No more lies," Adrian swore, his voice ironclad. "No more hiding. I swear it on my life, Maya."

"All right, Maya!" Dr. Aris called out from the foot of the bed. "On the next contraction, I need you to push with everything you have!"

The ambulance veered sharply around a corner, turning into the underground garage of the private Pilsen medical facility. The vehicle came to a smooth halt inside the secure bay, but no one moved to unmount the gurney—the birth was already happening.

Maya let out a long, echoing cry that filled the small space, pushing with every ounce of strength remaining in her exhausted body.

Adrian held her shoulders, shouting words of encouragement, his own tears falling freely onto her dress, until a sudden, distinct, sharp cry echoed through the back of the armored van.

The world seemed to freeze.

Dr. Aris held up a tiny, squirming, blood-stained baby girl, whose high-pitched cries cut through the low rumble of the idling engine like a silver bell.

"She's here," Dr. Aris smiled, wiping his brow. "A healthy baby girl."
