Chapter 2 - The Ghost of the Syndicate

Smoke filled the stairwell, smelling of cordite and burned insulation.
Before the smoke could clear, Adrian’s men opened fire, their suppressed weapons delivering controlled, lethal bursts into the doorway. Shouts in foreign tongues echoed back, answered by the return fire of automatic weapons that chipped away at the concrete walls, sending sharp chips of stone flying through the air.
Adrian pushed Maya into a recessed alcove meant for fire suppression equipment, covering her body entirely with his own. He raised his weapon, firing three precise shots through the haze. A heavily armored operative fell backward through the door, his weapon clattering down the steps.
"Who are they?" Maya screamed, covering her ears as the gunfire rattled her eardrums.
"Vancura’s remnants," Adrian spat, swapping the magazine of his pistol with terrifying speed. "Victor Vancura’s son took over his faction after I put his father in federal prison last winter. He thinks killing me will rebuild his family's reputation."
"He doesn't just want you, Adrian!" Grant shouted, firing down the stairwell as another assault was repelled. "They knew she was in the building! The intercept mentioned a high-value asset being brought to the fifty-second floor today. Someone inside our organization leaked her arrival!"
Adrian’s face went completely pale. The cold, calculating terror that had taken hold of him in his office returned tenfold. He didn't care about his empire. He didn't care about the fifty-two stories of steel and glass above them, or the millions of dollars tied up in his accounts.
He looked down at Maya. She was holding her stomach, her face pale, small beads of sweat forming on her forehead.
"A leak," Adrian whispered, his eyes narrowing into slits of pure, unadulterated venom. "Someone in my inner circle knew she was coming to sign the papers today."
"Adrian..." Maya groaned, her knees buckling slightly. "The pain... it's changing."
Adrian caught her before she touched the ground. He looked at her eyes, seeing the sudden, deep agony radiating from her posture. It wasn't just fear. The intense shock, the rapid descent down twenty flights of stairs, and the physical trauma of the assault were pushing her body into premature labor.
"Grant!" Adrian shouted, his voice echoing over the fading gunfire. "Forget the main parking garage. We're taking the utility tunnel beneath the boiler room. Clear a path now!"
"Boss, the utility tunnel leads straight into the public subway lines—it's uncontrolled!" Grant warned.
"I don't care where it leads!" Adrian yelled, picking Maya up into his arms despite her protests, holding her tight against his chest as he began moving down the stairs at a dangerous pace. "If anything happens to her or my daughter, I will burn this entire city to the ground, starting with everyone in this building!"
They breached the lower basement door, entering the vast, shadowy expanse of the tower's utility levels. The air was warm and heavy with the smell of motor oil and hot steam.

As they moved toward the secondary escape door, a lone figure stepped out from behind a massive generator unit, a weapon raised directly at Adrian's head.
It wasn't a mercenary in tactical gear. It was Julian Vance, Adrian’s chief legal counsel—the very man who had drafted the divorce papers.
