Chapter 9 - Shadows Left Behind

A year passed like a quiet dream in the mountains of Vermont.

The news from Chicago occasionally brought echoes of the old world—trials concluding, old rivalries fading into irrelevance, and the federal government closing its files on the Cole organization after finding no active criminal enterprises left to prosecute.

On a warm summer afternoon, a single black sedan pulled up the gravel driveway of the Vermont estate.

Adrian stood on the porch, his hand resting on his hip, watching as Grant Mercer stepped out of the vehicle. Grant was wearing a civilian coat, looking older, but entirely at peace.

"Grant," Adrian called out, walking down the steps to greet his old friend.

"Mr. Cole," Grant smiled, shaking Adrian’s hand firmly. "Or should I say, farmer Cole?"

"Just Adrian," he chuckled, leading Grant up to the porch. "What brings you all the way to Vermont?"

"I brought the final legal releases from the U.S. District Attorney's office," Grant said, handing a simple Manila folder to Adrian. "The investigation into the tower attack is officially closed. You are a completely free man, Adrian. No grand juries, no sealed indictments, no open warrants."

Adrian opened the folder, looking at the official seal stamped across the top of the documents. He felt a heavy weight—a weight he had carried since he was twenty years old—finally lift off his chest entirely.

"Thank you, Grant," Adrian said, closing the folder. "For everything. You saved my family that day."

"Your family saved itself," Grant replied, looking toward the garden where Maya was sitting on a blanket with one-year-old Clara, who was toddling around in the grass, chasing a butter yellow butterfly. "I just drove the van."

Maya looked up and noticed Grant, waving warmly at him to join them for lunch.

Grant looked at Adrian, his eyes filled with respect. "You built a good life here, Adrian. Don't ever look back."

"I don't even remember the way back," Adrian smiled warmly.
