Chapter 3 - The Broken Contract

"Put her down, Adrian," Julian said, his voice trembling slightly, though the barrel of his silver revolver remained steady.
Adrian stopped instantly. Grant and the remaining guards raised their weapons, but Julian was standing next to the high-pressure gas manifold. A single missed shot into the valves behind him would vaporize the entire basement level.
Maya gasped in shock from Adrian's arms. "Julian? You... you sent those papers to my house..."
"I had to, Maya," Julian said, his eyes darting nervously between Adrian and the gas lines. "It was the only way to get you back to Chicago without raising suspicion. Adrian had you hidden too well in Atlanta. His private security was impenetrable down there."
"You sold us out," Adrian said, his voice terrifyingly quiet. He didn't move an inch, his grip on Maya remaining immovable. "Five years as my senior counsel. I made you a partner. I protected your family from the federal indictments."
"You made me a servant!" Julian hissed. "You built an empire and treated the rest of us like line items on a ledger! Vancura offered me thirty percent of the shipping docks and full immunity once you were gone. All I had to do was bring Maya into the open so he could eliminate your bloodline in one clean sweep."
"You think Vancura will keep a deal with a rat?" Adrian asked, taking a slow, microscopic step forward.
"Stay back!" Julian screamed, cocking the hammer of his revolver. "He doesn't care about the money anymore, Adrian! He wants you to suffer the way his father suffered in prison! He wants you to watch your wife and your unborn child die right here in front of you!"
Maya looked up at Adrian. She could feel the wild, erratic rhythm of his heart beating against his ribs. He was terrified—not for himself, but for her. For the baby girl growing inside her.
"Julian," Maya spoke up, her voice surprisingly steady despite the sweat trickling down her neck. "Look at me."
Julian's eyes flicked to her for a fraction of a second.
"You have a daughter," Maya said softly, her hand pressing against Adrian’s jacket. "She's four years old. I remember when you brought her to the holiday dinner two years ago. You cried when she sang that song."
Julian's hand shook slightly. "Don't do this, Maya."
"If you do this," Maya continued, her voice filled with a desperate, persuasive warmth, "Adrian won't be the only one who dies today. Vancura will kill you the moment you hand us over. You know how these men work. You know you're disposable to them."
"She's right, Julian," Grant added coldly from the side. "Vancura’s team on the upper floor just executed two of your junior associates who helped clear their entry codes. You're a witness, not a partner."
Julian’s eyes widened in panic. His gaze shifted back toward the heavy steel door behind him.
In that single moment of hesitation, Adrian acted.
He didn't fire his weapon. He threw his body sideways, shielding Maya as Grant fired a single, lethal shot through the air. The bullet struck Julian cleanly, dropping him to the concrete floor before he could squeeze his trigger.
The gun dropped from Julian's hand, clattering against the cold floor.
May you like
Adrian didn't wait to inspect the body. He scrambled up, keeping Maya tucked safely against his side as the secondary alarm system began to flash yellow across the basement walls.
"The tunnel," Adrian commanded, his breathing heavy as he kicked open the maintenance hatch. "Now!"
