Chapter 4 - Through the Cold Underground

The utility tunnel was a narrow, dark brick corridor built over a century ago, winding beneath the modern foundation of Chicago's financial district. The air was damp and freezing, carrying the distant rumble of the city's subway trains.
Maya could barely stand. Each contraction was coming faster now, pulling her breath from her lungs in sharp, painful gasps.
"I can't... Adrian, I can't walk anymore," she sobbed, leaning heavily against the curved brick wall. Her knees gave out, but Adrian caught her before she touched the damp floor.
He swept her up into his arms again, ignoring the dark stain of blood slowly seeping through the bandage on his left arm—a shallow graze from the stairwell firefight he hadn't even mentioned.
"Grant, take the lead," Adrian ordered, his voice tight. "Find an exit near the river station. We need medical support immediately."
"Boss, the entire district is crawling with Vancura’s men and city police," Grant said, holding a tactical tablet as they walked quickly down the dark tunnel. "If we hit a public hospital, you’ll be arrested on sight for the lockdown alert at the tower, and Vancura’s snipers will be waiting at the entrance."
"Then call Dr. Aris," Adrian snapped. "Tell him to prepare the private clinic in Pilsen. Get the armored van to the river access hatch."
Maya gripped Adrian’s shirt collar, her fingers white. "Adrian... look at me."
He looked down, his dark eyes filled with a raw, unshielded fear that no enemy in Chicago had ever seen.
"If something goes wrong..." she whispered, her voice breaking. "If you have to choose..."
"Don't say it," he interrupted fiercely, his jaw setting into concrete. "Don't you dare say it, Maya."
"You save her," Maya demanded, tears spilling over her pale cheeks. "Do you hear me, Adrian? You save our daughter."
"I am saving both of you," Adrian said, his voice breaking into a ragged, desperate tone. "I spent three months pretending I could live without you to keep you safe from this filthy world. I was wrong. I was a coward. I thought cutting you loose was protection, but it was just me running from the fear of losing you. I am not losing either of you today."
Maya looked at him, seeing through the mask of the crime boss to the man she had married four years ago—the man who used to read poetry to her in bed, the man who had promised to build a world where she would never feel afraid.
A heavy mechanical clatter echoed from the end of the tunnel.
Grant stopped, lowering his weapon slightly as a heavy iron grate was pushed open from the outside. A tall, thick-set man in a dark trench coat stepped into the dim light of the tunnel.
May you like
It was Nikolai Vancura—the young, ruthless heir who had brought war to Adrian’s doorstep. He held a heavy combat shotgun, flanked by four armed mercenaries.
"End of the line, Cole," Nikolai laughed, his voice echoing menacingly off the damp brickwork. "You ran like a rat into the sewers. How fitting for the great Adrian Cole."
