Chapter 10 - The Garden of Iron and Roses

Five years later.

The summer sun shone brightly over the valley, painting the mountain peaks in brilliant hues of gold and blue.

The yard behind the stone manor had been turned into a breathtaking garden filled with blooming white roses, tall apple trees, and a wooden playground that Adrian had built with his own hands over the spring.

Six-year-old Clara, with long dark hair and piercing, intelligent eyes just like her father's, was swinging high on the wooden swing set, her laughter echoing across the meadow.

"Higher, Daddy! Push higher!" she squealed with delight.

Adrian stood behind the swing, pushing her gently, his face lit up with an unbridled, joyful grin. "Not too high, little bird! Your mother will have my head if you fall into the rose bushes!"

"I won't fall!" Clara laughed, her small hands holding tight to the ropes. "I'm strong like Mommy!"

"That you are," Adrian chuckled, stopping the swing gently and lifting her down onto the soft grass.

Maya walked out of the kitchen, carrying a fresh tray of iced tea and homemade biscuits. Her stomach showed a delicate, familiar curve beneath her blue summer dress—she was five months pregnant with their second child, a son they had already agreed to name Gabriel.

Adrian walked over to her, taking the tray from her hands and setting it on the picnic table before wrapping his arms gently around her waist.

He leaned down, pressing his ear against her stomach, listening for the soft movement within.

"Is he kicking?" Maya asked, running her fingers through his dark, gray-dusted hair.

"He's quiet today," Adrian smiled, looking up at her. "He knows his father is listening."

Clara ran over, wrapping her small arms around both of their legs, sandwiching herself between her parents with a happy sigh.

"Daddy," Clara looked up, her dark eyes wide with curiosity. "Why did you use to live in the big city with all those tall buildings?"

Adrian looked at Maya, sharing a long, silent look filled with a lifetime of shared history, terrifying trials, and unconditional love.

He knelt down, bringing himself to his daughter's eye level, and took her small hand into his calloused palm.

"I lived in the city because I was lost, Clara," Adrian said softly, his voice full of warmth. "I thought the world was a cold, scary place, and I thought I had to build high walls to keep the dark away."

"And then what happened?" Clara asked, tilting her head.

"And then your mother walked into my office one cold February morning," Adrian smiled, looking up at Maya, whose eyes were filled with happy tears. "She brought you with her, and she showed me that the only thing that really keeps the dark away isn't walls or guns or money. It's love. It's family."

Clara smiled, wrapping her arms around Adrian's neck, pressing a soft kiss against his cheek. "I'm glad you came home, Daddy."

"Me too, little bird," Adrian whispered, holding his daughter tight while reaching out his other hand to pull his wife into his embrace. "Me too."

Under the warm Vermont sun, surrounded by the scent of white roses and the quiet rustle of the pine trees, the former crime boss who had once ruled Chicago with an iron fist sat with his family, completely, utterly at peace.
