Chapter 1 - The Shattered Facade

The cold fluorescent lights of the neonatal conference room seemed to hum with an oppressive frequency as District Attorney Richard Hale stared at the photograph in his trembling hands.
The image was unmistakable. His son, Evan—the young man he had raised alone after his wife’s tragic death, the golden boy he had aggressively groomed for law school—was standing outside a roadside diner in Oakridge, smiling radiantly with his arm wrapped securely around Madeline Carter. And there, resting over her slightly swollen stomach, was Evan’s hand.
The date stamped on the back in fading ink read: May 14th. Exactly three weeks before the violent robbery at Vance Fine Jewelry.
"This... this proves nothing," Richard stammered, though his voice lacked its usual booming courtroom authority. The color had abandoned his face completely, leaving him looking frail, old, and haunted. "It’s a photograph. It could be staged. Evan would have told me."
"Mr. Hale," Dr. Naomi Brooks said softly, her voice steady and implacable. "Your son’s genetic marker is in that baby’s blood. The genetic mutation—KCNQ1 Variant H-42—is a dominant inherited trait. It didn't come from Madeline. It came from your family line. Your grandson is currently lying in an incubator down the hall, struggling to maintain a survivable heart rhythm because he inherited a life-threatening cardiac arrhythmia from your son."
Richard dropped the photograph onto the table as if it had burned his skin.
During the trial two years ago, Richard had framed Madeline Carter as a cold-blooded getaway driver who had willingly lured the jewelry store owner to the back room while an masked gunman executed a brutal, armed robbery that left the elderly shopkeeper paralyzed. When Maddie refused to name the masked gunman, Richard had personally asked the judge for a harsh sentence, framing her silence as sociopathic loyalty to a criminal syndicate.
Now, the terrifying truth began to claw its way to the surface of his mind.
Maddie hadn't stayed silent out of loyalty to a gang. She had stayed silent to protect Evan.
"I need to speak with her," Richard whispered, his hand instinctively gripping the edge of the conference table.
"She is in the secure recovery wing under guard," Naomi replied, her eyes narrowing. "She hasn't seen her child since the delivery. She was shackled to a bed rail during an emergency C-section, Mr. Hale. And unless you are willing to authorize immediate specialized cardiac treatment and consent to formal paternity confirmation, that baby may not survive the week."
Richard closed his eyes, his breathing ragged. For twenty years, he had built a reputation as an uncompromising pillar of justice in the state. He had sent hundreds of people to prison. But in this room, holding the photographic evidence of his own son’s secret life, the grand legal tower he had constructed began to crack from the foundation down.

"Do whatever it takes to save the child," Richard said, his voice barely audible. He reached for the pen and signed the consent form with a shaking hand. "Where is Evan?"
"You're his father," Naomi said coldly, taking the form. "You tell me."
