Chapter 5 - Unlikely Allies

By noon, the atmosphere inside the hospital had reached a boiling point.
Dr. Naomi Brooks sat in the office of Assistant District Attorney Sarah Sterling—a sharp, uncompromising prosecutor known for her fierce independence and total lack of patience for political maneuvering.
Sarah read the medical reports, the genetic sequencing results, and the affidavit prepared by Naomi regarding Maddie Carter’s statement.
"This is explosive, Naomi," Sarah said, leaning back in her leather chair, tapping a gold pen against her desk. "You're accusing the District Attorney’s son of armed robbery, attempted murder, and framing a pregnant woman—and you're claiming the DA himself secured the fraudulent conviction."
"I am presenting undeniable biological and physical evidence," Naomi countered firmly. "The baby has the Hale family cardiac mutation. The photograph places Evan Hale with Madeline Carter right before the crime. And Madeline’s testimony accounts for every missing detail from the original investigation that your office ignored two years ago."
The door to Sarah’s office opened without a knock.
Richard Hale walked in. He looked ten years older than he had that morning. His eyes were bloodshot, his hands trembling as he carried a heavy leather briefcase.
Sarah stood up immediately. "District Attorney Hale—"
"Save it, Sarah," Richard said heavily, setting the briefcase on her desk. He reached into his coat and pulled out a signed, official document.
"What is this?" Sarah asked.
"My formal resignation as District Attorney of Madison County, effective immediately," Richard said, his voice flat and completely drained of life. "And inside that briefcase is the complete internal investigative file on the Vance Fine Jewelry robbery, including unredacted police logs, audio recordings, and witness statements that my office suppressed during Madeline Carter’s trial."
Naomi and Sarah exchanged a look of pure astonishment.
"Richard..." Sarah whispered. "What did you do?"
"I spent my entire life believing that the law was a tool to punish the guilty," Richard said, tears finally filling his aged eyes. "But I was blind to the monster living under my own roof. My son confessed to me four hours ago. He committed the robbery. He shot Arthur Vance. He used Madeline Carter as a scapegoat, and I... I was the executioner who carried out his plan."
Richard turned to Naomi, his shoulders slumping in deep, agonizing shame.
"How is the baby, Doctor?" he asked softly.
May you like
"He is stable," Naomi replied, her tone softening slightly as she saw the genuine, shattered remorse in the old man's face. "The cardiac team has initiated medication that controls his heart rhythm. But he needs his mother."
"Sarah," Richard said, turning to the assistant DA. "I want you to file an emergency petition for a writ of habeas corpus and a motion to vacate Madeline Carter’s conviction immediately. I will testify under oath as a witness for the defense. And I want an arrest warrant issued for my son, Evan Hale."
