Chapter 7 - The Cornered Predator

While Maddie held her son for the first time, state police cruisers were speeding toward the private airstrip on the northern edge of the county.
Evan Hale had realized his father wasn't going to protect him. Using a fake passport and fifty thousand dollars in cash he had stashed in a private safe, Evan had arranged a private charter flight to South America.
He stood near the open door of a twin-engine plane parked on the tarmac, nervously checking his watch as the pilot finished pre-flight inspections.
"Come on, move it!" Evan yelled at the pilot. "We need to take off now!"
Suddenly, four unmarked black SUVs tore onto the tarmac, their tires screaming against the asphalt, surrounding the plane in a tight defensive box.
The doors flew open, and state troopers stepped out with rifles raised.
"EVAN HALE! STEP AWAY FROM THE AIRCRAFT! HANDS ON YOUR HEAD!" shouted a voice through a megaphone.
Evan’s face twisted into sheer panic. He reached into his coat pocket for his concealed firearm—the same weapon he had kept hidden for two years.
"DON'T DO IT, EVAN!"
A familiar voice called out from behind the lead police cruiser.
Richard Hale stepped forward, wearing a plain gray coat, his hands visible. Behind him stood Assistant DA Sarah Sterling and several state detectives.
Evan stared at his father, his eyes manic and wild. "Dad! Tell them to back off! You can fix this! You're the District Attorney!"
"Not anymore, Evan," Richard said, his voice echoing across the windy tarmac, filled with absolute sorrow. "I resigned this afternoon. I gave Sarah the entire file. I told them everything."
"You betrayed me!" Evan screamed, his finger pressing against the trigger inside his pocket. "I’m your son! Your own flesh and blood!"
"I spent two years helping you destroy an innocent girl and her child," Richard said, taking a slow, steady step toward his son. "I thought I was protecting justice, but I was protecting a monster. Drop the gun, Evan. Do not force these officers to kill you."
Evan looked at the ring of armed troopers, then at his father's broken, resolute face. He realized, with crushing finality, that his wealth, his privilege, and his father's power could no longer shield him from reality.
Slowly, Evan pulled his hand from his pocket and dropped the handgun onto the tarmac.
Troopers rushed forward, slamming him down against the cold asphalt, pulling his arms behind his back, and pulling the steel handcuffs tight around his wrists.

As he was dragged past his father toward a police cruiser, Evan spat on the ground. "I hate you," he hissed.
Richard watched his son being shoved into the back of the car. He didn't turn away. "I know, Evan. But for the first time in your life, you are going to answer for what you’ve done."
