Chapter 2 - Behind the Steel Door

Two floors up, in the prison infirmary’s high-security wing, Maddie Carter lay staring at the water-stained ceiling tiles. The heavy iron cuffs around her left wrist clicked against the steel bedrail every time she took a deep, painful breath. Her abdomen throbbed from the fresh C-section incision, but the physical pain was nothing compared to the hollow, terrifying void in her chest.

Every time she closed her eyes, she heard the frantic rhythmic alarms of the monitoring equipment.

His heart rate is dropping. Get respiratory in here.

"Please," Maddie whispered to the guard standing near the heavy wooden door. Officer Higgins, a stoic woman in her fifties, didn't look back. "Please... just ask the nurse if he's breathing. That's all I need to know. Just tell me if my baby is breathing."

"You know the rules, Carter," Higgins said flatly, though her eyes softened slightly. "Infirmary staff update us when they have news. Keep quiet."

The door unlocked with a heavy metallic thud.

Maddie braced herself, expecting another correctional nurse with IV pain medication. Instead, Dr. Naomi Brooks walked in, accompanied by two armed officers who remained in the hallway.

Maddie sat up instantly, wincing as the strain pulled at her surgical staples. "Doctor! Is he—is my boy okay? Please tell me!"

Naomi walked quickly to the side of the bed, gently placing a hand over Maddie’s handcuffed wrist to calm her. "He is alive, Madeline. His name is currently listed as Baby Boy Carter. He had two dangerous heart episodes after delivery, but we have stabilized him in the NICU."

Maddie let out a long, ragged sob, hiding her face in her free hand. "Thank God... thank God."

"Madeline, I need to talk to you about something very serious," Naomi said, pulling a chair closer. "We ran a genetic screening on your baby to understand why his heart rate was crashing. He carries a very rare inherited cardiac mutation."

Maddie froze. Her tears stopped instantly, her eyes widening in sudden, absolute terror. "A... a mutation?"

"Yes," Naomi said softly. "It’s called Long QT Syndrome Variant 1. It causes severe, life-threatening arrhythmias under stress or exertion. It’s an inherited trait, Madeline. And when we cross-referenced the state registry, only one family in this county carries it."

Maddie pulled her arm back, the handcuff rattling violently against the steel frame. "No... no, please don't."

"District Attorney Richard Hale was just here," Naomi continued, her voice filled with deep compassion. "I showed him the photograph we found in your personal property locker. The picture of you and Evan outside the diner."

Maddie buried her face in her pillow, her shoulders shaking hysterically. "You shouldn't have done that! You don't understand what they'll do to him! You don't know what Richard is capable of!"

"Maddie, look at me," Naomi commanded gently but firmly.

Maddie lifted her tear-streaked face.

"Evan wasn't just your boyfriend, was he?" Naomi asked. "Evan was the man in the mask at Vance Fine Jewelry."
