Chapter 3 - The Secret in the Shadows

The silence in the infirmary room was so heavy that the drip of the IV machine sounded like thunder.
Maddie pressed her hands against her face, her chest heaving as years of buried terror broke through her fragile reserve.
"I met Evan three years ago at the community college library," Maddie whispered, her voice cracked and raw. "I was working two jobs, trying to get my associate degree in accounting. He was so kind, so smart. He didn't tell me who his father was for months. He said he wanted me to love him for who he was, not his family's money."
She looked at Naomi, her eyes desperate for understanding.
"We fell in love. When I found out I was pregnant, we were so happy. But Evan was terrified of his father. Richard controlled everything in his life—his trust fund, his law school applications, his schedule. Evan owed money to some dangerous people from a gambling debt he incurred in Chicago, and he knew if Richard found out, Richard would disown him and strip him of his inheritance."
"So Evan planned the robbery," Naomi stated.
"He told me he just needed to borrow my car to pick up an old friend," Maddie wept. "He asked me to wait inside the diner across the street from Vance Fine Jewelry. I didn't know he had a gun! I didn't know he was going into that store! When I heard the gunshots and saw him run out with a black bag, I was frozen in shock."
"Why didn't you tell the police?" Naomi asked. "Why didn't you tell the jury?"
"Because the night before my trial began, Evan came to see me at the detention center," Maddie revealed, her voice trembling violently. "He told me that if I named him, his father would make sure I died in prison before the baby was born. He said Richard had connections with the prison guards, with the judges, with everyone. Evan promised me that if I took the fall, he would take care of our child once he was born. He said he would hire the best lawyers to appeal my case after his father retired."
"And you believed him?"
"I was twenty-one years old, scared, pregnant, and facing a man who had the power of the entire state behind him!" Maddie cried out. "I stayed silent to save my baby's life! And then... once I was sentenced and shipped to the state correctional facility, Evan stopped coming. He blocked my letters. He disappeared."
Naomi took a deep breath, her hands clenching into fists at her sides. The monstrous picture was now completely clear. Evan Hale had used a gentle, vulnerable young woman as his disposable shield, leaving her to rot in a prison cell while he continued his pristine, privileged life under his father's protective shadow.
"He didn't just abandon you, Maddie," Naomi said bitterly. "He let his own son be born in handcuffs."

"Where is my baby?" Maddie asked, her voice turning fiercely protective. "Can I see him?"
"I am going to make sure you see him," Naomi vowed, standing up. "And I am going to make sure the people who did this to you finally answer for it."
