Chapter 4 - The Confrontation

In the sprawling, gated suburb of Crestview Estates, Richard Hale pulled his sedan into the driveway of his son’s stone manor. The morning sun was just rising over the manicured lawns, but Richard felt as though he were walking into a dark, suffocating abyss.

He unlocked the front door with his spare key and stepped inside.

The house was quiet. Empty crystal whiskey glasses rested on the living room table, alongside discarded law textbooks and legal briefs.

"Evan?" Richard called out, his voice echoing off the vaulted ceilings.

A door opened upstairs, and Evan Hale walked down the wooden staircase wearing a silk robe, holding a cup of coffee. He looked relaxed, healthy, and handsome—the picture of effortless privilege.

"Dad?" Evan said, surprised. "What are you doing here so early? I thought you had the grand jury proceedings at eight."

Richard didn't answer. He walked into the center of the living room, reached into his coat pocket, and threw the photograph of Evan and Maddie onto the glass coffee table.

Evan stopped at the bottom of the stairs. His smile vanished.

"Where did you get that?" Evan asked, his tone dropping instantly into a cold, defensive register.

"Madeline Carter gave birth to a boy four hours ago at the county hospital," Richard said, his eyes fixed on his son with a terrifying mix of grief and rage. "The baby was born with Long QT Syndrome. The exact same variant your mother died of. The exact same variant you carry."

Evan swallowed hard, his knuckles whitening as he gripped the staircase banister. "Dad... listen to me. She's a convict. She's trying to set me up to get a early release—"

"SHUT UP!" Richard roared, the sound shattering the quiet room.

It was the first time in his life Richard had ever raised his voice at his son with such raw, brutal fury.

"Do not lie to me!" Richard shouted, stepping forward and grabbing Evan by the lapels of his robe. "The doctor ran the genetic sequencing! The baby’s blood has our family’s DNA! You were with her! You were with her three weeks before the robbery at Vance Fine Jewelry!"

Evan tried to pull away, but Richard held on with astonishing strength.

"Did you do it?" Richard demanded, his voice cracking with emotion. "Did you rob that store? Did you paralyze Arthur Vance?"

"He wouldn't give me the diamonds, Dad!" Evan screamed back, suddenly dropping his refined facade, his face twisting into an ugly, narcissistic sneer. "I owed two hundred grand to loan sharks in Chicago! They were going to break my knees! I needed fast cash, and Arthur Vance had two million in uninsured loose stones in his vault!"

Richard stumbled back as if he had been shot. "You... it was you. All this time... it was you."

"Madeline was perfect!" Evan sneered, adjusting his robe with repulsive nonchalance. "She was stupid, madly in love with me, and completely isolated. She had no family, no money for a real lawyer. I told her to wait in the diner, and when the cops swept the area, her car was registered near the scene. You did the rest, Dad! You prosecuted her! You called her a monster in front of the jury! You sent her to prison for me!"

Richard stared at his son, his mind reeling in absolute horror. He had spent his entire career believing he was a vessel of justice, a protector of the innocent. But in reality, he had been used as a hitman by his own sociopathic son to destroy an innocent girl.

"I am calling the state police," Richard whispered, reaching for his phone.

"You won't do a damn thing, Dad," Evan laughed coldly. "If I go down, your career is over. The press will find out you prosecuted the mother of your own grandson to protect the real shooter. You'll be disgraced, disbarred, and ruined. You're going to cover this up—just like you always protect our family name."
