Chapter 6 - The Storm Breaks

The news swept through the city like a wildfire.
By 3:00 PM, headline banners across local news networks read: MADISON COUNTY DA RESIGNS AMID COVER-UP SCANDAL: SON WANTED FOR FELONY ARMED ROBBERY AND FRAMING INNOCENT MOTHER.
Reporters and camera crews swarmed the steps of the county courthouse and the main entrance of the hospital.
Inside the hospital’s secure wing, the iron shackles were finally removed from Maddie Carter’s wrist.
Officer Higgins personally unlocked the metal cuffs, stepping back with a respectful nod. "I’m sorry for how you were treated here, Miss Carter. Truly."
Maddie didn't care about the apology or the guards. The moment her hand was free, she pulled down her hospital gown, held her abdomen to brace her surgical incision, and stood up.
"Where is he?" Maddie asked, tears of anticipation spilling down her cheeks. "Where is my baby?"
Dr. Naomi Brooks opened the door to the room, pushing a mobile transparent crib inside.
Inside the crib, swaddled in a soft pink blanket with tiny blue hearts, lay Baby Boy Carter. He was small, his head covered in fine dark hair, his tiny hands tucked against his chin. Monitors were still connected to his chest, but the steady, rhythmic beep... beep... beep... of his heart monitor was smooth, clear, and stable.
Maddie collapsed back onto the edge of her bed, holding out her arms. "Oh, my sweet boy... my sweet, sweet boy."
Naomi gently lifted the newborn and set him against Maddie’s chest.
The moment the baby touched his mother’s skin, he let out a tiny, soft whimpering cry—his very first sound. Maddie pressed her face into his soft blanket, sobbing uncontrollably as she counted his tiny fingers, kissing his warm forehead over and over again.
"He's going to be okay, Maddie," Naomi said, wiping a tear from her own eye. "The medication is working. His heart rhythm is perfectly normal now."
"What is his name?" Sarah Sterling asked, standing in the doorway with a smile.

Maddie looked up, her face glowing through her tears with a radiant, invincible joy.
"His name is Leo," Maddie said proudly. "Leo Carter. Because he’s a fighter."
