Chapter 2 - The Silent War Room

By 2:00 AM, the third floor of the Moretti estate had been transformed into a command center.
While Emma and Lily slept under heavy security in the master guest suite adjacent to Alessandro’s own quarters, Marco and six elite cyber-security specialists were running deep trace diagnostics on the rogue signal transmitted from the doll's eye.
Alessandro sat in a leather armchair, a map of the Chicago harbor spread across the glass table before him, alongside financial dossiers on Hale Capital. Standing at attention before him was Rocco, his chief of field operations—a broad-shouldered man with a scar running from his ear to his jawline.
"Julian Hale left his penthouse forty minutes ago, Boss," Rocco reported in a low growl. "He's heading toward the industrial docks near Warehouse 14. We tapped his cell phone—he made an encrypted call to a burner registered to Viktor Vance’s shell company."
"Vance," Alessandro mused, swirling the dark liquid in his glass. "Viktor thinks he can use my fiancée’s family to bypass my security, plant a wire in my home, and find leverage to force me out of the port deal."
"Why the child's doll?" Rocco asked, frowning. "Why not plant the bug in your office or the main dining hall?"
"Because my office is swept for bugs twice a day by Marco's team," Alessandro explained calmly. "The main dining room is swept before every meal. But no one sweeps a housemaid's child's broken cloth toy. It was clever. It allowed them to capture ambient audio from the second floor corridor, monitor security guard shift changes, and listen to my off-duty conversations when I walk past the nursery."
Marco called out from his station. "Boss! I’ve decrypted the transmission log from the micro-transceiver. It wasn't just audio and video. It was sending real-time thermal telemetry."
Alessandro stood up, stepping over to Marco’s screens. "Thermal?"
"Yes," Marco pointed to a complex heat-map rendering on his monitor. "They weren't watching the kid, Boss. They were mapping the structural wall density behind the nursery closet. That wall backs directly up to your private floor safe where the physical bearer bonds and secondary server hard drives are kept!"
Alessandro’s jaw tightened. "They were planning a physical breach. An infiltration team."
Before Rocco could speak, the estate’s secondary alarm chime sounded softly—a low, rhythmic pulse indicating a perimeter fence breach at the eastern gate.
Marco’s fingers flew across his keyboard. "Perimeter camera three is dark. Camera four just got hit with a signal jammer. We have three vehicles entering through the old service road... they bypassed the outer biometric gate using a valid security clearance code."
Alessandro didn't show a hint of panic. In fact, a dark, terrifying smile spread across his face. "Victoria’s code."
"Did she give it to them?" Rocco demanded, drawing his suppressed sidearm.
"Whether she gave it willingly or was tricked doesn't matter anymore," Alessandro said coldly. "They think they have the element of surprise. They think they are picking a lock in the dark."
He turned to Rocco. "Do not engage them at the gate. Let them enter the lower courtyard. Bring Emma and Lily down to the panic room beneath the wine cellar immediately."
"Yes, Boss," Rocco said, turning on his heel.

Alessandro walked over to his desk, unlocked the bottom drawer, and pulled out a sleek, black custom sidearm. He checked the magazine with an effortless, practiced motion, chambered a round, and slipped it into his shoulder holster.
"Marco," Alessandro said quietly. "Turn off the estate lights. Let us welcome our guests to the Moretti home."
