Chapter 5 - A New Light in the Nursery

By dawn, the storm had passed, leaving behind a crisp, clear morning sky over the estate grounds.
The mansion had been completely swept and cleared by Marco’s technical crew. Security guards stood at every entrance, but the oppressive, paranoid tension that had hung over the estate for months was gone, replaced by a quiet, absolute order.
Alessandro walked slowly down the carpeted hallway of the second floor. He stopped outside the nursery door, which stood slightly ajar.
Inside, sunlight streamed through the tall windows, illuminating the pale blue walls and plush carpets.
Emma sat on the edge of the small bed, wearing a soft cardigan over her uniform, reading a picture book to Lily. Lily was curled up in her mother's lap, drinking warm milk from a mug, looking sleepy but peaceful.
Alessandro knocked softly against the doorframe.
Emma looked up, her face lighting up with immediate relief when she saw him. "Mr. Moretti."
"Please, Emma," Alessandro said, stepping into the room. "Call me Alessandro."
Emma stood up gently, placing Lily on the bed. "Is... is it over?"
"The threat has been eliminated," Alessandro assured her, stepping closer. "Julian Hale and his sister have been dealt with. Viktor Vance's operatives are in federal custody, and his empire is currently being dismantled by my associates in the city. You and Lily are completely safe."
Emma took a deep, shuddering breath, a few tears of relief escaping her eyes. "I don't know how to thank you, Alessandro. When I saw that light in the doll... I thought my life was over. I thought I brought danger into your home."
"You didn't bring danger, Emma," Alessandro said softly, reaching out to gently wipe a tear from her cheek with the pad of his thumb. "You brought truth. If Lily hadn't been brave enough to speak up, my enemies would have breached my home."
He reached into his coat pocket and pulled out Daisy.
The doll had been meticulously mended by a master tailor Marco had brought to the estate at 4:00 AM. The coarse glass eyes had been replaced with soft, hand-embroidered blue silk buttons, and a new crimson velvet ribbon was tied in a neat bow around its neck.
Lily's eyes went wide. "Daisy!"
Alessandro knelt down, handing the restored doll to the little girl. "Daisy is back, Lily. And I personally checked her... she doesn't have any cameras, she doesn't make clicking sounds, and she promises to keep watch over your room every single night."
Lily took the doll, hugging it tight against her chest, then surprised Alessandro by stepping forward and wrapping her tiny arms around his neck.
"Thank you, Mr. Alessandro," she whispered into his ear.
Alessandro froze for a fraction of a second—unaccustomed to physical affection from anyone, let alone a child—before slowly wrapping his strong arms around the little girl, holding her gently.
Emma watched them, her heart overflowing with an emotion she had tried so hard to suppress for eleven months. She saw past the billionaire title, past the mafia boss reputation, and saw the lonely, noble man who had protected them with his life.
"Emma," Alessandro said, standing up and looking into her warm brown eyes. "You will no longer work as a maid in this house."
Emma’s heart dropped. "Alessandro... are you firing me?"
"No," Alessandro smiled—a genuine, breathtaking smile that transformed his stern face entirely. "I am appointing you as the estate's Director of Household Operations. You will have your own wing, a full salary, and Lily will have a tutor provided by the best academy in the city."
May you like
Emma gasped. "I... I can't accept that..."
"You can, and you will," Alessandro said, his voice firm yet filled with incredible warmth. "Because this house needs you, Emma. And if I am being completely honest... so do I."
