Chapter 4 - The Price of Ambition

In the private study, the air was thick with the scent of ozone and wet leather.

Victoria Hale sat in a chair, her hands trembling so violently that she could no longer pretend to hold her silk robe closed. Standing near the fireplace, shivering in a rain-soaked coat, was her brother, Julian Hale.

Julian’s hair was wild, his expensive suit ruined, his face pale with terror. Rocco stood behind him, a heavy hand resting casually on Julian’s shoulder.

Alessandro sat behind his desk, nursing a fresh glass of bourbon. On the table between them lay the cloth doll, Daisy, its torn seam open, exposing the empty cavity where the camera had been.

"I didn't know they were going to attack the house!" Julian wept, dropping to his knees before Alessandro's desk. "Alessandro, I swear to God! Viktor Vance told me it was just a listening device! He said he just wanted financial intelligence on the port deal! He threatened to ruin my firm if I didn't get a wire inside your house!"

"And you thought my maid's four-year-old daughter was an acceptable casualty?" Alessandro asked, his voice deathly calm.

"I didn't think anyone would get hurt!" Julian pleaded, clutching the edge of the desk. "Victoria said the kid was always in the nursery! I told Kaspar to make sure the room was empty!"

Alessandro slowly turned his gaze to Victoria.

She was staring at her brother with absolute horror. "Julian... you told me you were helping me secure our family's seat on the board! You told me the doll was being fitted with a tracking chip so we could monitor Alessandro's security movements!"

"You were both willing to compromise my home," Alessandro said, his tone icy. "Victoria, you allowed a wolf into my sanctuary because you were jealous of the space a quiet maid and her child occupied in this house."

"That's not true!" Victoria cried, tears spilling over her mascara. "I love you, Alessandro! I was trying to protect our future! That maid... she looks at you like you belong to her! You give that little brat the nursery that belonged to your dead daughter! You never looked at me the way you look at them!"

The room fell into a suffocating, deadly silence.

Rocco took a step back, knowing that Victoria had just crossed a line that no one survived crossing.

Alessandro slowly stood up from behind his desk. He walked around the table, stopping inches from Victoria's chair. He looked down at her with a look of profound, unadulterated disgust.

"My daughter died seven years ago," Alessandro said, his voice dropping into a register so quiet it was terrifying. "Her nursery was cold, dead, and filled with grief. Emma Bennett brought life back into that room. Her daughter brought laughter back into a house that had forgotten what it sounded like."

He reached down, gently untying the engagement ring from Victoria's finger—a massive fifteen-carat diamond that sparkled under the study lights. He tossed it casually onto the desk like a piece of worthless junk.

"The engagement is ended," Alessandro announced. "Hale Capital will be liquidated by noon tomorrow. Every asset your family owns will be acquired by my holding firms for pennies on the dollar. You and your brother will leave Chicago by nightfall. If I ever see either of your faces in this city again, I will not call my lawyers."

Julian sobbed, collapsing onto the floor. "Alessandro, please! We'll be ruined! We'll have nothing!"

May you like

"You will have your lives," Alessandro replied, turning his back on them. "Consider it a gift to commemorate my late daughter's memory. Rocco, throw them out of my gates."

As the guards dragged the weeping siblings out of the study, Alessandro stood alone in the quiet room. He walked over to the desk, picked up the cloth doll, and carefully tucked the stuffing back into its chest.
