Chapter 8 - The Grain Silo Siege

Inside the rusted, cavernous interior of the abandoned grain silo, Emma was tied securely to a wooden chair beneath a harsh overhead light.
Viktor Vance stood before her, smoking a cigar, his mercenary guards stationed along the steel catwalks above.
"You're very pretty, Emma," Vance sneered, blowing smoke into her face. "I can see why Alessandro soft-hearted himself over you. A quiet little widow to clean his house and warm his bed."
Emma held her head high, refusing to show terror, despite the rope biting into her wrists. "Alessandro will kill you for this."
Vance laughed hysterically. "Alessandro is a businessman now! He wears three-thousand-dollar suits and talks to city councilmen! He has lost his teeth! When he comes through those doors to trade his port shares for your life, my snipers will put a bullet through his brain."
BOOM.
The massive reinforced steel doors of the grain silo blew off their hinges with a thunderous shockwave that shook the entire concrete structure.
Dust, concrete debris, and twisted metal rained down as three armored Moretti tactical vehicles smashed directly through the outer wall, their floodlights blinding every guard on the catwalks.
"FIRE! KILL THEM ALL!" Vance screamed, scrambling behind a concrete pillar.
The silo erupted into a roaring battleground.
Moretti's elite tactical team poured out of the armored vehicles, laying down a terrifying barrage of suppressive fire. Heavy caliber rounds tore through the rusty catwalks, sending Vance’s mercenaries crashing to the ground.
Through the center of the smoke and fire walked Alessandro Moretti.
He moved with ruthless, terrifying efficiency, firing his assault rifle with pinpoint precision, dropping two mercenaries who attempted to flank him. He was a force of nature, a mob boss who had returned to his roots, unstoppable and merciless.
Vance, realizing his men were being slaughtered in minutes, panicked. He drew his nickel-plated revolver, lunged out from behind the pillar, and grabbed Emma from behind, pinning his gun against her temple.
"STOP! STOP OR I BLOW HER BRAINS OUT!" Vance shrieked, his voice cracking with pure terror.
The gunfire in the silo slowly died down.
Moretti's men held their positions, weapons raised, aiming at Vance.
Alessandro stepped through the lingering smoke, his rifle lowered at his side, stepping into the circle of light. His face was covered in dust, his eyes glowing with dark, absolute murder.
"Put the gun down, Viktor," Alessandro said, taking a slow step forward.
"One more step and she dies, Moretti!" Vance screamed, hiding behind Emma, his hand trembling against the trigger. "Give me the port transfer documents! Order your men to stand down and let me reach the river, or I take her with me!"
Emma looked at Alessandro through the dim light, her eyes filled with tears, but her voice strong. "Don't give him anything, Alessandro! I'm not afraid!"
Alessandro didn't stop walking. He took another step forward.
"You made a fatal mistake tonight, Viktor," Alessandro said softly. "You thought Emma was my weakness."
He took another step.
"You thought taking her would force me to bend."
He took one more step, now only ten feet away.
"The truth is, Viktor... she isn't my weakness."
Alessandro raised his left hand slightly, signaling Marco on the roof.
"She is the only thing that was keeping me merciful."
CRACK.
A high-caliber sniper round fired through the silo’s glass skylight shattered Vance’s right wrist. His revolver flew from his grip as he screamed in agony, falling backward onto the dusty floor.
Before Vance could touch the ground, Alessandro surged forward, grabbing Emma, spinning her safely behind his body, and drawing his sidearm in one fluid motion.
Alessandro stood over the bleeding Viktor Vance, pointing his gun directly between the Russian boss's eyes.
"Please... Alessandro... mercy..." Vance whimpered, clutching his shattered wrist.

"Mercy is for human beings," Alessandro whispered.
