Chapter 3 - Shadows in the Courtyard

The storm outside raged with renewed fury, drowning out the soft crunch of tactical boots on the wet gravel of the inner courtyard.
Five men dressed in black tactical gear, armed with suppressed submachine guns, moved like ghosts through the shadows of the estate's stone arches. Leading them was a man known only as Kaspar—Viktor Vance’s top field operative, a ruthless merc who had executed hits across three continents.
Kaspar held a small handheld tablet displaying the live thermal feed from the doll. "The second-floor corridor is clear," he whispered into his comms headset. "Target safe is on the other side of the nursery wall. Thermal shows two guards at the end of the hall. We drop them, plant the breaching charge, take the hard drives, and exit through the service tunnel."
"What about the maid and the kid?" one of his men asked over the radio.
"Zero witnesses," Kaspar replied coldly. "Clean sweep."
They reached the heavy side entrance of the estate. Kaspar tapped in the bypass code provided by Julian Hale. The heavy iron latch clicked open silently.
They stepped inside the dark service hallway, their night-vision goggles illuminating the world in bright, eerie green.
Suddenly, the heavy iron door behind them slammed shut with a deafening CLANG.
The sound of mechanical deadbolts sliding into place echoed through the corridor like gunshots.
Kaspar spun around, raising his weapon. "Breach! It's a trap!"
Before his men could react, the overhead emergency lights flared to life—not with dark night-vision-friendly red light, but with blinding, four-thousand-lumen white floodlights.
Kaspar and his men screamed, tearing off their night-vision goggles as intense pain scorched their retinas.
From the far end of the hallway, standing framed by the brilliant white light, was Alessandro Moretti. He was alone, his hands casually tucked into his trousers pockets, his expression utterly relaxed.
Behind Kaspar’s team, hidden panels in the wood-paneled walls slid open. A dozen of Moretti's elite security guards, dressed in heavy body armor and carrying tactical shotguns, stepped into the hall, locking the mercenaries in an inescapable crossfire.
"Welcome to my home, gentlemen," Alessandro’s voice echoed off the marble walls, deep and resonant. "I believe you were looking for a doll?"
Kaspar, still half-blinded, tried to raise his weapon toward Alessandro.
CRACK.
A single shot fired by Rocco from an upper balcony tore through Kaspar’s right shoulder, spinning him around and sending his weapon clattering across the slick floor.
The remaining four mercenaries immediately dropped their weapons, raising their hands above their heads, realizing instantly that resistance meant immediate execution.
Alessandro walked slowly down the hallway, his leather shoes clicking against the floor. He stopped in front of the bleeding, kneeling Kaspar, looking down at him as if he were a bug on his shoe.
"Viktor Vance sent you to murder a child in her bed for a corporate ledger?" Alessandro asked softly.
Kaspar coughed, blood splattering against his black uniform. "It... it was just business, Moretti. Hale gave us the codes... he said the house was soft..."
"My house is never soft," Alessandro whispered, bending down to grab Kaspar by his tactical collar, pulling him up until their eyes were inches apart. "And anyone who threatens the people under my roof ceases to exist."
Alessandro looked over at Rocco. "Put them in the basement holding cells. Strip them of their comms. And bring Julian Hale to me before sunrise."

"And Miss Victoria, Boss?" Rocco asked.
Alessandro’s eyes grew colder than the rain outside. "Bring her down to the study. It’s time for my fiancée to see the true cost of her ambition."
