Chapter 1 - The Ghost in the Ledger

Six months of absolute peace had made Dominic Moretti soft, or so the whispers in the dark corners of Chicago claimed. The new estate in the quiet, tree-lined suburb of Lake Forest was a sanctuary. The scent of fresh-cut grass and the laughter of Noah, Caleb, and Sophie had replaced the metallic tang of blood and the suffocating smoke of underground clubs. Dominic had successfully transitioned the Moretti empire into a legitimate global logistics giant, leaving the bloody crown of the Chicago underworld to his trusted lieutenant, Gabriel Russo.
Yet, peace in their world was always an illusion.
It began on a rainy Tuesday morning. Dominic was in his home office, reviewing the quarterly shipping manifests of the Atlantic-European routes. A cup of black coffee sat steaming beside him. The door creaked open, and Elena stepped in, holding a tray with warm croissants. Her dark brown hair was pulled back in a loose bun, a few stray curls framing her face. The sight of her still made his heart skip a beat, a stark contrast to the cold, calculating man he had to be for so many years.
"You’ve been staring at those screens for three hours, Dominic," Elena said softly, setting the tray down. She leaned over his shoulder, her warmth instantly grounding him. "Is something wrong with the Rotterdam shipments?"
"Just a minor discrepancy," Dominic replied, offering her a reassuring smile as he pulled her onto his lap. "A rounding error. Nothing to worry about, mia cara."
But it wasn't a rounding error. Dominic was a master of numbers, and he knew that a ghost was moving through his shipping lanes. Over the past three weeks, nearly four million dollars worth of high-end pharmaceutical cargo had "evaporated" between the ports of Genoa and Baltimore. The digital signatures used to clear the customs manifests were flawless. In fact, they were too flawless. They used an old, highly classified encryption key that had supposedly been retired five years ago.
A key that only two people had ever possessed: Dominic himself, and his late father, Vincent Moretti.
Later that afternoon, Dominic’s encrypted phone buzzed. It was Gabriel Russo.
"Dominic, we have a situation," Gabriel’s voice was tense, stripped of its usual bravado. "Someone is moving product through our old territory in the South Side. It’s a highly addictive synthetic opioid. The streets are flooded, and the cops are breathing down my neck. But here's the kicker: the dealers are claiming they are working for 'The Real Moretti'."
Dominic’s grip on the phone tightened until his knuckles turned white. "Matteo is locked away in ADX Florence. He has no access to the outside world, let alone the resources to pull this off."
"It’s not Matteo," Gabriel said grimly. "I captured one of the street bosses this morning. Before he took a cyanide pill, he gave me a name. He said the orders came from the 'First-Born'."
Dominic froze. The room seemed to drop ten degrees.
Before Dominic could process the implication, his private email chimed. An anonymous message had arrived. It contained no text, only a single PDF attachment. When Dominic opened it, his blood ran cold. It was a scanned copy of a birth certificate from a private clinic in Geneva, dated thirty-five years ago.

The mother's name: Isabella Vancini—Vincent Moretti's first, secret wife who had allegedly died in a car crash before Dominic was born. The child's name: Lucian Moretti.
Attached to the certificate was a live video feed of the Lake Forest estate’s perimeter fence. A figure in a dark trench coat was standing just beyond the tree line, holding a single red rose, looking directly into the security camera.
