Chapter 7 - The Vulnerability

Dominic returned to the penthouse at 3:00 AM. The apartment was dark, save for a single light in the kitchen. Elena was sitting at the counter, a cup of tea cooling between her hands.

Dominic walked in, placing his weapon on the console. He looked exhausted, the weight of the five-year lie pressing heavily on his shoulders.

"Did you kill him?" Elena asked softly, not looking up.

"No," Dominic said, sitting on the stool beside her. "Not yet. But he knows the boundaries now."

Elena turned her head to look at him, tears shining in her eyes. "You haven't changed, Dominic. You're still the monster your father built."

Dominic flinched. The words cut deeper than any knife. "I am what I have to be to keep you alive, Elena. When you left, my world turned to stone. Finding you... finding out I have three beautiful children... it’s the first time I've felt alive in five years. Don't take that away from me."

Elena looked at his hands—the hands that could command an empire or crush an enemy, but were currently trembling with fear of losing her again. She realized that despite the violence of his world, his love for her had never wavered.

"I was so lonely, Dominic," she whispered, her defense cracking. "Raising three babies alone in a tiny town, changing names, always looking at every black car that drove down our street. I hated you for the life we couldn't have."

Dominic reached out, his large hand gently covering hers. This time, she didn't pull away. "The past is gone, Elena. I am going to build a new wall around us. A wall that no one can breach."
