Chapter 6 - The Long Night

The flight back to Chicago was the longest ten hours of Dominic’s life. The data Elena had recovered had successfully frozen over three hundred million dollars of Lucian’s assets across Europe. But a cornered predator is the most dangerous kind.
Before their plane landed, Gabriel Russo called with devastating news.
"Dom, they hit the Lake Forest estate," Gabriel said, his voice raw with pain. "It was a massive tactical strike. They used smoke grenades, EMPs... they bypassed all our electronic security. I got hit, Dom. I’m in the hospital. I couldn't stop them."
Dominic’s heart shattered. "The kids? Elena?"
"The guards managed to get Noah and Sophie into the safe room," Gabriel groaned. "But... Caleb. He was on the soccer field when they struck. They took him, Dom. Lucian has Caleb."
Elena, overhearing the conversation, let out a heart-wrenching scream, burying her face in her hands. Dominic caught her, his own tears burning his eyes, but his mind instantly hardened into ice.
The time for business was over. The beast that Vincent Moretti had raised, the monster that Dominic had tried so hard to bury, was clawing its way to the surface.
When they landed in Chicago, Dominic was met by a convoy of black SUVs. But these weren't his corporate security team. These were the elite, battle-hardened soldiers of the old Moretti family—men who had sworn loyalty to Dominic, not because of money, but because he was their undisputed king.
"Where is he?" Dominic asked his tactical commander as they drove toward a secure safe house.
"We traced the extraction vehicle to an abandoned steel mill on the South Side," the commander replied. "It’s a fortress. Lucian has at least fifty heavily armed mercenaries inside. He’s waiting for you."
Dominic turned to Elena, who had dried her tears, her face now a mask of pure, maternal rage.
"Stay at the safe house with Noah and Sophie," Dominic said, his voice quiet, deadly. "I am going to bring our son home. And I am going to end this."

"Kill him, Dominic," Elena whispered, her voice trembling but cold. "Do not let him survive this night."
"He won't," Dominic promised.
