Chapter 6 - The Shadows of Cicero

The drive to the Moretti stronghold in Cicero was silent. Rain lashed against the armored windows of Dominic’s sedan. He checked the magazine of his weapon, his mind focused entirely on the safety of the three children sleeping in his penthouse.
When Dominic and Gabriel entered the private lounge of the Cicero warehouse, Matteo was already waiting, surrounded by six heavily armed bodyguards.
"Dominic," Matteo smiled smoothly, pouring a glass of whiskey. "I heard you had a very sentimental family reunion last night. Triplets? Congratulations, cousin. You’ve been hiding a beautiful secret from the family board."
"There is no secret, Matteo," Dominic said, walking to the center of the room, completely ignoring the weapons pointed at him. "They are my children. They are the future of the Moretti name. And you are going to stay away from them."
Matteo’s smile faded, replaced by a cold, predatory stare. "The family board doesn't like secrets, Dominic. Old Vincent wanted that woman gone for a reason. She’s a civilian. A weakness. And those kids... how do we know they’re yours? Maybe she found a nice guy in Wisconsin to help her pass the time."
Before Matteo could finish the sentence, Dominic moved with lightning speed. He crossed the distance between them, grabbed Matteo by the collar of his expensive jacket, and slammed his head against the solid mahogany table.
The bodyguards raised their weapons, but Gabriel and Dominic’s men instantly matched them, red laser sights painting the chests of Matteo’s crew.

"Speak about my wife or my children like that again, and I will bury you under the docks before the sun rises," Dominic whispered into Matteo’s ear, his voice devoid of any human mercy. "The board answers to me. The empire belongs to me. If you even look toward Michigan Avenue, I will end your bloodline."
Dominic threw him away, turning his back contemptuously. "We’re leaving, Gabriel. Let him think about his choices."
