Chapter 9 - The Purge of Chicago

Lucian’s death marked the end of the war, but Dominic knew that the roots of the conspiracy still ran deep. There were still those within the Chicago underworld and the global shipping shipping network who had aided Lucian’s rise.
If Dominic wanted a truly peaceful life for his family, he had to perform one final, absolute purge.
Over the next two weeks, while Dominic recovered from his wounds at a highly secured military hospital, he and Gabriel Russo—who was slowly recovering from his injuries—coordinated a massive, sweeping operation.
Using the financial records Elena had recovered and the intelligence gathered from Lucian’s surviving mercenaries, they launched a double-pronged attack.
First, the legal front. Elena delivered a massive dossier of financial corruption, bribery, and money laundering to the federal prosecutors, implicating dozens of corrupt harbor officials, politicians, and rogue shipping executives across Europe and North America. It was the largest corporate cleaning in the history of the shipping industry.
Second, the underworld front. Gabriel Russo, now fully healed and backed by the entire unified strength of the Chicago families, swept through the city’s criminal districts. Every street boss, dealer, and mercenary who had aligned with Lucian was given a simple choice: absolute retirement, or immediate elimination.
By the end of the month, the name Moretti was completely cleansed of any active criminal operations. The underworld had a new king in Gabriel Russo, who swore a lifelong pact of peace with the legitimate Moretti family.
Dominic stood on the balcony of his hospital room, looking out over the Chicago skyline. The city looked different now. It no longer looked like a battlefield. It looked like a home.
Elena walked onto the balcony, wrapping a warm coat around his shoulders. "The doctors say you can come home tomorrow."
"Is it finally over, Elena?" Dominic asked, his voice weary but peaceful.

Elena took his hand, squeezing it tightly. "It’s over, Dominic. Lucian’s network is dismantled. The corrupt officials are in handcuffs. Gabriel has stabilized the city. We are finally free."
Dominic looked down at her, a gentle smile touching his lips. "Let’s go home."
