Chapter 10 - The Golden Horizon

Six months later. May had returned to Chicago.
The scars on Dominic’s shoulder and arm had healed into faint white lines, a testament to the final battle he would ever have to fight. The Lake Forest estate was more beautiful than ever, the security guards now replaced by a simple, state-of-the-art alarm system and the natural privacy of the towering oak trees.
Today was a special day. It was the triplets' eleventh birthday.
The backyard was a vibrant scene of color and joy. A massive white tent was set up on the lawn, decorated with balloons and ribbons. A long table was piled high with gifts, a massive chocolate cake, and plates of traditional Italian pastries that Elena had spent the morning baking with the children.
Noah and Caleb were running around the yard with Gabriel Russo, who had arrived wearing a tailored suit but had quickly shed his jacket to play referee in a high-stakes soccer match.
Sophie was sitting at the edge of the lawn, showing a beautiful crown of dandelions she had woven to her mother.
"It’s perfect, Sophie," Elena smiled, kissing her daughter’s forehead as she placed the crown on her own dark brown hair.
Elena wore a stunning green sundress, her eyes glowing with a happiness that was no longer shadowed by fear. She looked toward the porch, where Dominic was standing, talking to some of their close, legitimate business partners.
Dominic caught her eye and smiled. He excused himself and walked down the wooden steps, his steps light and confident. He had officially stepped down as the active CEO of Moretti Logistics, appointing a highly capable, independent board of directors, retaining only his shares and his role as a creative consultant. He was, at last, a full-time husband and father.
"Everything okay, Mr. retired businessman?" Elena teased as he reached her, wrapping her arms around his neck.
"More than okay," Dominic murmured, his hands resting gently on her waist. He looked out over the lawn, watching Caleb score a goal against Gabriel, Noah cheering wildly, and Sophie laughing as she chased a butterfly. "I was just thinking about how beautiful my wife looks in a dandelion crown."
Elena laughed, a sound that Dominic knew he would never tire of hearing. "You gave us this, Dominic. A life where our children can just be children."
"No," Dominic said softly, his pale blue eyes filled with a deep, infinite love. "We gave this to each other. We survived the storm, Elena. And now, we get to enjoy the sunshine."
Dominic leaned down, his lips meeting hers in a deep, passionate kiss. It was a kiss that carried the memory of their pain, but more than that, it carried the absolute promise of their future.

As the sun began to set over Lake Michigan, casting a brilliant, warm golden glow over the entire estate, the children ran over, laughing and throwing themselves into their parents' arms.
The Moretti name was no longer a symbol of fear, blood, or legacy. It was a family. Undefeated, unbroken, and finally, truly free.
