Chapter 10 - The Warmth of Forever

One year later.

Winter had returned to Chicago. Outside the heavy glass windows of the Lake Forest mansion, a soft, gentle snow was falling, dusting the green pine trees and the quiet shores of the lake in a pristine blanket of white.

Inside the master suite living room, a massive stone fireplace crackled merrily, casting a warm, golden glow across the plush carpets and dark wood furniture.

Clara sat in a deep velvet armchair near the fire, wrapped in a soft cashmere blanket.

In her arms, wrapped in a pale pink woolen blanket, was a baby girl—little Sofia Ferrante, just four weeks old. The baby slept peacefully, her tiny dark hair tufted against her head, her small fingers holding tightly onto Clara’s little finger.

The heavy oak doors opened softly.

Luca walked into the room, carrying two mugs of hot chocolate. He had shed his suit jacket, wearing a simple black sweater, his dark eyes completely softened as he looked at his wife and newborn daughter.

He set the mugs down on the side table and quietly dropped to his knees beside Clara's chair.

"Is she sleeping?" Luca asked in a low, gentle whisper, his massive hand reaching out to touch the baby's cheek with incredible, feather-light care.

"Fast asleep," Clara whispered back, her face glowing with pure contentment. "She has your dark hair, Luca."

"Thank God she has your heart," Luca murmured softly, looking up from the baby to meet Clara's eyes.

He leaned up, pressing a tender, lingering kiss to Clara’s lips—a kiss filled with years of absolute loyalty, unconditional devotion, and deep, unshakeable love.

The snowfall outside picked up slightly, swirling against the windowpanes, but inside the room, the fire burned bright and warm.

Clara looked out at the falling snow for a second, then looked down at her husband kneeling beside her, holding their sleeping child in her arms.

She remembered the freezing concrete of the warehouse. She remembered the terrifying sound of the wind, the despair of the cold, and the moment his heavy headlights had torn through the dark night to find her.

The cold was just a distant memory now.

Luca reached up, wrapping his large, warm hand over hers, holding both her hand and their daughter's tiny fingers together in one solid, unbroken grip.

"You're warm now, my love," Luca whispered softly into her ear.

May you like

Clara rested her head against his shoulder, letting out a soft, happy sigh as the firelight danced around them.

"I will always be warm with you, Luca," Clara whispered back. "We're home."
