Chapter 7 - The Grand Jury Subpoena

Three weeks later.

The tranquil atmosphere of the Ferrante corporate headquarters on Michigan Avenue was disrupted at 9:00 AM when federal marshals delivered a sealed grand jury subpoena directly to the executive suite.

The target of the subpoena wasn't Luca Ferrante.

It was Clara.

Inside the private office, Chief Defense Attorney Marcus Thorne sat across from Luca and Clara, reviewing the legal document with a grim expression.

"Vance is playing a psychological game," Thorne explained, tapping the paper. "He knows Luca is legally shielded by layered corporate structures. So he’s calling you, Clara, as the Chief Executive Officer of the primary holding company. He wants to put you in front of a grand jury without your attorney present in the room—which is standard federal grand jury procedure—and badger you until you make a single contradictory statement."

Luca’s face went completely stone-cold. He stood up from his leather chair, his hands resting flat on the mahogany desk, leaning forward with terrifying intensity.

"She is not testifying," Luca said, his voice dropping into a lethal, quiet register. "I will take the indictment myself before I let a prosecutor drag my wife into a grand jury room."

"Luca, calm down," Clara said softly, reaching across the desk to place her hand over his trembling fist.

"I will not calm down!" Luca flared, his dark eyes burning with protective rage. "You know how federal prosecutors operate! They trap civilians on technicalities! They will twist every word you say to manufacture a perjury charge!"

"I am not a helpless civilian anymore, Luca," Clara said clearly, her voice echoing with absolute confidence.

She turned to Attorney Thorne. "What is the specific scope of the subpoena, Marcus?"

"They are requesting all internal financial audits regarding the South Dock acquisition from three years ago," Thorne answered. "Specifically, the fuel logistics reports filed right before Ricci's death."

A cold, calculating smile appeared on Clara’s face.

"The fuel logistics reports?" Clara asked. "The ones Ricci altered?"

"Yes," Thorne nodded. "Vance believes those altered logs prove Luca was operating an illegal fuel smuggling ring."

"Then Vance is an idiot," Clara stated calmly, standing up from her chair and walking over to the safe behind the painting on the wall. She opened it, pulling out a thick, leather-bound binder filled with original financial documents.

She set the binder in front of Thorne.

"Three days after Luca rescued me from that warehouse," Clara revealed smoothly, "I personally spent forty-eight hours recovering the uncorrupted server backups from the South Dock terminal. These are the original, unedited digital signatures from the primary fuel suppliers."

She flipped to a highlighted page.

"These records don't show Luca smuggling fuel," Clara explained, pointing to the signatures. "They show that Ricci was secretly falsifying delivery logs to steal fuel and sell it to Marco Moretti. Luca didn't run a smuggling ring—he was the victim of corporate embezzlement by a rogue employee. I filed a formal disclosure report regarding this exact discrepancy with the State Department of Revenue two years ago."

Thorne stared at the document, his eyes widening in shock, then let out a loud, incredulous laugh.

"You filed a formal disclosure report with the state two years ago?" Thorne gasped. "Before Vance even took office?"

"I am an accountant, Marcus," Clara said with a cool, dangerous smile. "I never leave a paper trail open. Prosecutor Vance thinks he’s walking me into a trap. In reality, he’s about to hand us the complete, legal destruction of his own case."

Luca stared at his wife, the tension in his shoulders instantly evaporating, replaced by an overwhelming look of awe and deep, profound pride.
